Sweeney’s Homevalue (Sweeney Plumbing & Hardware Ltd) in Co. Donegal is a one-stop shop for all your building, hardware, plumbing & heating, DIY and agri supplies requirements.
Fronted by former All-Star footballer Adrian Sweeney, Sweeney’s Homevalue is an award-winning third-generation family business with outlets in Lettermacward and Derrybeg. A plumber by trade, Adrian also runs a second company called Sweeney Mechanical Services which specialises in plumbing, heating, gasworks, ventilation and renewables.
“The two businesses complement each other,” he points out.
“They both operate out of Lettermacward and go hand-in-hand. We also have a satellite store in Derrybeg near Gweedore. Sweeney’s Homevalue employs 15 people between the two locations, while Sweeney Mechanical Services employs 10 and carries out a lot of work in schools, hospitals and industry.
“As well as running the Derrybeg store along with Emmanuel Galligan, Kevin Friel is out on the road calling to sites and catering for their heavy builds’ needs. Mark Gallagher looks after the plumbing supplies side of things and is happy to quote anyone who is building a house. Our Lettermacward site is divided between plumbing and home hardware.
“We’re always striving for improvement and to provide the best possible service for our customers and work environment for our team.”
Named ‘Best Heating & Plumbing Store in Ulster’ at the 2022 United in Excellence Awards, Sweeney’s Hardware supplies everything from steel for foundations up to a chimney cap.
“We’ve expanded into heavy building materials such as timber and aggregates in recent years. As a result, we have everything you need for a new house build or any other building project for that matter,” Adrian adds.
The Sweeney family have been serving the local community since the early 1900s when Adrian’s grandfather Myles returned from the US to open a small grocery shop in Lettermacward. The business was handed down to Adrian’s father Willie in the 1950s before Adrian himself took up the reins over 20 years ago.
“We phased out the grocery side of the business to concentrate on plumbing supplies,” the former Donegal football sharpshooter explains.
“Becoming part of the Homevalue group allowed us to branch into hardware and builders’ providers. We opened the second outlet in Derrybeg seven years ago. We have everything our customers need, from DIY products to full construction supplies and materials. We also supply animal feeds and deliver anywhere in Donegal. Our mission is to provide our customers with a friendly, knowledgeable and value-for-money service.
“We have developed strong relationships with generations of families going back over 100 years and continue to offer them the best advice and service. I can’t praise our staff enough. They’re brilliant at what they do and I certainly wouldn’t be able to run two businesses without them.”

It’s all go for Adrian who is married to Crona and is dad to Naoise (12), Iarla (10), Aoife (seven), Fiadh (six) and four-year-old twins Cara and Caoimhín. He played senior football with Donegal from 1996 to 2007, during which time he won a coveted All-Star award in 2003, a National League medal in 2007 and played in five Ulster Senior Championship finals. Remarkably, the prolific forward played 72 consecutive matches for the county between 1996 and 2003.
Still involved as a coach with his club Dungloe’s U8 girls, U14 boys and adult reserve teams, the affable plumber and businessman would like to take this opportunity to thank his customers and suppliers for their continued support.
