The rise and rise of Cunningham Contracts

25 Mar , 2022

No stranger to winning awards, Cunningham Contracts has also been nominated for its involvement in the Townspark, Kells and Balmoral Manor housing developments. The company’s HQ was shortlisted for Commercial Project of the Year, while Townspark and Balmoral Manor were nominated in the Residential Project of the Year (Large) and Residential Project of the Year categories respectively. Launched in 2012, the Irish Construction Industry Awards recognise, encourage and celebrate original and innovative contractors, businesses, teams, consultants and projects that demonstrate excellence in the built environment.

“We were delighted to receive three nominations. They reflect well on our work and our team who have put in tremendous work over the past year, and who are continually adding to our success,” says Cunningham Contracts Pre-Construction Manager Donal Myles.

These are certainly exciting times for the company which was founded by Tim and Joanne Cunningham in 2006, and has since grown to employ in excess of 180 people. It had a turnover in excess of £40 million this year and that figure is expected to double in 2022.  Cunningham Contracts have established themselves as industry leaders in healthcare, residential, commercial education and the highly complex mission critical and data centre sector.

May 28 2021 was a red-letter day for the company as it marked the move into its new state-of-the-art headquarters. Completed in just four-and-half-months, the multi-million project was a true labour of love for those involved.

“We wanted to provide a functional facility for our staff with leading innovative technologies and capabilities, while providing a statement that we continue to deliver the highest quality construction and fit-out projects,” Donal explains.

“It represents a major investment in the future of Cunningham Contracts Group and our staff, developing a state-of-the-art headquarters at a time when nothing was certain. The rapid build programme of 4.5 months further demonstrates our company’s resilience and ability, while strengthening our position as a leader in the construction sector.”

The team at Cunningham Contracts is full of praise for all the members of the design team and the many stakeholders who were involved in bringing the new headquarters to fruition.

These include Gray Design Ltd, Cranston Consulting Ltd, HTC Mechanical, O’Hanlon & Farrell Electrical, CLG, Convery Ceilings, McMullan & O’Donnell, ISD Signs, O’Hare Steel, Annett Landscaping, Carrick Security, S&S Communications and Arcadian IT to name but a few.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to its success. Thanks to the talented members within our team who not only met, but exceeded our expectations by creating what can only be described as a state-of-the-art office and manufacturing facility,” he added.

Handed over to Meath County Council last February, Townspark is a development of 41 social housing units in Kells which has also been recognised by the Irish Construction Industry Awards adjudicators. The project team was headed up by Site Manager Stephen O’Hare and Project Surveyor Kieran Murphy, with Brian McMahon and Declan Byrne also playing pivotal roles in achieving handover for what is one of Cunningham Contracts’ key clients.

Shortlisted for Residential Project of the Year, Balmoral Manor is a prestigious development of four-bed luxury detached homes.

The contractor is currently involved in projects in Ballyfermot and Clondalkin for Dublin City Council and South Dublin County Council, Sallins, Co. Kildare for Tuath Housing and Arklow for Wicklow County Council. Its latest projects are in Tallaght for Cluid Housing and Monaghan where it is carrying out the €10 million redevelopment of the St Davnet’s Hospital Monaghan Primary Care Centre. The redeveloped Care Centre will provide state-of-the-art healthcare in outpatient and critical services for general practitioners, paediatrics, ophthalmology, occupational therapy and dentistry specialisms, at a time when our healthcare system needs it the most.

“We’re extremely busy at the moment, thankfully. Our projects include Cornamona Court in Ballyfermot, which is a mixed development of 80 apartments and houses; Mayfield Park in Clondalkin, which is a Design & Build project for South Dublin County Council; Delaney Park in Arklow which comprises 47 units; and Liffey Square in Sallins, which is a 29-unit design and build for Tuath Housing.

“We’re also working on multi-billion mission critical complex for a Blue Chip client in Dublin, further expanding our portfolio of complex and innovative project delivery in critical environments.”

Cunningham Contracts’ strong company ethos is complimented by a sustainable approach to construction, quality of customer service, commitment to health and safety, impressive build quality and personal development and training. The company understands that construction is not just about the ‘build’, but rather the project and the client, the environment and the entire contract team. Working with both private and public clients, the high performance, skill and drive of Cunningham Contracts has seen it develop an impressive portfolio.
