Celebrating 25 years in business, Cootehill Precision Engineering Ltd manufactures high-quality precision components, from one-off to large batch quantities. The company was recently honoured by Cavan Local Enterprise with their Best Established Business award as managing director Gerry McIntyre proudly reflects.
Manufacturing precision engineering parts for all industries since 1992, Cootehill Precision Engineering Ltd in Cootehill, Co. Cavan has built up an enviable reputation for advice, quality of work and a fast and reliable service. This has resulted in many longstanding relationships and satisfied customers across a wide variety of industries both north and south of the border.
The successful company employs a team of highly-trained engineers, toolmakers and fitters who are able to react quickly to the most demanding of customers’ needs, supported by state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. Cootehill Precision Engineering is ISO 9001:2008 accredited and is committed to maintaining high standards, as reflected in the quality of its precision engineered parts.
The company has come a long way since local man Gerry McIntyre and his wife Caroline, who sadly passed away last September, set it up a quarter of a century ago. Gerry, who is now joined in the business by his son Aaron, started out with a couple of machines and fondly remembers securing some early work from Abbott, who have a nutrition plant in Cootehill.
“It was a big thing back then to be asked to do a job by a multinational company like that. I was delighted to get it and even more delighted when I got the cheque for £67!” he smiles.
“We’ve since built up a large client-base thanks to the quality of our work, price competitiveness, friendly matter and our ability to cater for our customers’ requirements. Being honest and upfront with your customers is very important. When we say we’ll have a job done at a certain time, we mean it. I have found over the years that if you keep talking and listening to your customers, they’ll be loyal to you.”
Operating from a purpose-built 10,000 sq. ft. workshop in Cootehill Business Park, Cootehill Precision Engineering prides itself on delivering quality innovative precision engineering solutions. The family-run business provides engineering support and manufacturing services to its customers’ requirements from component design stage through to the creation of the end product.
Its in-house CADCAM facilities and modern engineering equipment allows Gerry and his nine-strong team to manufacture quality 2D and 3D complex components, small and large, to customer specifications. Cootehill Precision Engineering also offers CNC and manual Milling, CNC and manual Turning, Wire EDM machining, surface grinding and welding fabrication services. In addition, it manufactures, builds and repairs a variety of special purpose equipment upon request as well as jigs, fixtures and punch tooling. The Co. Cavan-based firm also does heat treatment of steels and small parts deburring and polishing.
The company specialises in the manufacture of special purpose equipment and component parts for the quarry, glass concrete, food, dairy and electronic industries. It works closely with customers on new product development and the enhancement of existing designs for best manufacture and assembly, and also offers advice on cost-efficient manufacturing and component materials selection. Cootehill Precision Engineering’s customers include Encirc Glass, Lakeland Dairies, Northern Hydraulics, Portafill Mobile Screening Solutions, Oranmore Precast (Norfolk), Lakeland Dairies, O’Reilly Concrete, HDS Energy, Feldhues GMBH, Abcon Industrial Products, Exergyn, Ovenfeast Technologies, Gerflor Group, Univet and McAree Engineering.
“We do a lot of work for the concrete and quarry sectors,” Gerry explains.
“At the moment, the Northern Ireland and UK market accounts for over half of our business, but we’re trying to change that and are looking to grow our customer-base in the Republic of Ireland because of the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Our location on the border means that we’ve always had to deal with currency fluctuation, but Brexit will make things even more challenging for us.”
Well-known in motorsport circles, Gerry is keen to ensure his company continues to go from strength to strength by investing in staff training and new equipment, including a 3D printing facility.
“With 3D printing, we’ll be able to make prototype parts in plastic and show the customer in his hand what it’s going to look like before it goes to the design stage. We can make anything from a one-off part to a few thousand parts. We also make stair brackets for concrete stairs and concrete wall panel clamps to name but two of our products.”
Gerry was delighted to receive the Best Established Business award at the Cavan Local Enterprise awards night in Cavan’s Hotel Kilmore on Friday, March 10 last. He is full of praise for Cavan Local Enterprise for the support they have given him in terms of grants, mentoring and staff training down the years.
“It’s great to get recognition like that. We were the only engineering company in for the award and were thrilled to win it. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their continued support. We look forward to working with and for them for many more years to come.”
