Based in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, Flavin Construction has earned a reputation as one of the area’s premier building contractors. Building Ireland caught up with company Managing Director Maurice Flavin to learn all about what is a thriving business.
Flavin Construction provides its clients with a wide range of construction services, including Home Renovation, PSCS, Construction Management, Project Management, Pre-Construction Advice, Fit-Out, Refurbishment, Design & Build, Small Works and Building Maintenance.
Maurice Flavin himself has close to 30 years’ experience in the construction industry and started his business venture two decades ago after returning home from the US.
Since that time, Flavin Construction has grown a reputation for being one of Munster’s premier building contractors.
It’s a reputation which has come from the energy and dedication which the company gives to each of its projects, big or small.
Building Ireland caught up with Maurice Flavin recently to learn all about the ins and outs of the company, along with the current state of business at the minute.
“The company itself is established 20 years and right now we have five full-time staff,” he explained.
“My wife Karen looks after the accounts and I’ve a son, Tomás, involved and another son, Mikey, that works with us on a part-time basis.
“Basically, we carry out residential and commercial work and right now we would be in the middle of a four-year contract with Waterford County Council for refurbishing houses.
“We’d be doing four or five houses a month for Waterford County Council and around 90 percent of our work would be within Waterford itself.”
Maurice and his team are known first and foremost for their work locally, having also completed projects for Dungarvan Rugby Club.
After completing works on Dungarvan RFC’s gym a few years back, Flavin Construction is now working on its club house at Ballyrandle, where the only rugby club in west Waterford is situated.
The family-run business strives to serve the local community by delivering on its reputation as one of the top building contractors in the area.
Back when Maurice first started out with his business venture in Dungarvan, things were certainly different, as he himself outlined.
“I was in America for a few years and did a lot carpentry work over there,” he said.
“I came back home in 2000 and started doing carpentry around here with my brother.
“After that, I made a decision to go out on my own in building and, thankfully, haven’t looked back since.
“The first big job that really got us off the ground was a pharmacy here in Dungarvan which we built and we’re still busy here almost 20 years later.”
Business continued to grow from there for Maurice and his team, and they’d even come through the harsh recession which hit the construction industry hard in 2008.
This year the company had to contend with government lockdown in March, which saw businesses all over the country shutdown for the best part of 10 weeks in order to battle the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Flavin Construction did have some essential work to keep them going though, as Maurice outlined.
“We continued work during lockdown because we had the essential work with Waterford County Council and since May we’ve been very busy with a couple of different on-going projects,” he said.
Flavin Construction is fully compliant with all the obligations under the Construction Regulations and have a very satisfactory Health & Safety record.
The company takes safety seriously, ensuring that all employees arrive home to their families after their day’s work is complete.
All employees at Flavin Construction carry the required certification for their work tasks. Some of the certifications include: SOLAS Safe Pass IOSH Project Supervision Construction Stage.
To date, the company has undertaken projects involving all levels of complexity and possess the capability to provide for buildings from the very simplest to the more technically demanding.
So, what has been the secret to success for Flavin Construction down through the years?
For Maurice, honesty has always been the best policy when it comes to working with clients.
“We try to be as honest as we can when it comes to the jobs that we do,” he said.
“Any job that we do here, we have always remained on good terms with the client and I think that says a lot in this line of work.”
When it comes to knowledge, dedication, craftsmanship and attention to detail, Flavin Construction simply won’t be topped.
The company is renowned for its excellent work around the Waterford area, along with its capability to deliver projects on time and within budget.
Looking towards 2021, its owner and founder hopes that there will be some kind of return to normality as the globe continues to battles against the Coronavirus pandemic.
“I hope that things just go back to normal eventually,” said Maurice.
“We want things to go back to the way it was before Covid hit us, and that we can just stay busy next year like we are at the moment, because you never know what’s around the corner.”
