NC Plant Hire Ltd was set up in 1980 and the company has made considerable progress ever since. With a proven track record and an extensive fleet of machinery, the Clontibret, Co Monaghan-based operation boasts a steady workload.
NC is a family run business with Noel and wife Yvonne at the helm. Their two sons, Colm and Brendan, daughter, Pamela, and son-in-law Mark also feature on the thirty person strong weekly payroll.
Backboned by over 35 years experience in the plant hire business, the team at NC are committed to providing a first class service in all aspects of client requirements and customer service.
From the first point of contact they make 100% effort at every stage of a project to ensure the needs of clients are being met and expectations exceeded.
That is why the likes of Monaghan County Council and Cavan County Council are repeat customers. They appreciate the flexibility, quality, value and safety that NC brings to the table.
“We specialise in all civil works in the plant end,” Clontibret native Noel explained, “from tarmacadam to concreting, footpaths, groundworks, road works, laying of water mains, sewer and storm water lines etc, bridge work and stone work. Practically all of our work comes through Monaghan County Council and we also do a small bit for Cavan County Council.”
One of NC’s objectives is that all work completed must be carried out to their clients specifications and that the work is delivered on time and within budget. They also provide a rapid deployment of their equipment to meet their customers demanding contract requirements.
NC believe that in order to deliver the service and quality objectives which have been set, they must continually monitor quality of work and services and improve them when necessary.
Safety is of paramount importance and they are committed to meeting all their obligations in that respect and complying with the most up-to-date policies. Health & Safety Training is important and their employees have participated in a variety of training. A skilled workforce is essential and their employees are highly skilled and attend regular training courses.
“Quality workmanship is a big one and cost comes second,” Noel replied: when asked the key attributes that NC pride themselves on.
“Reliability is another one. As a result, we have been working with Monaghan County Council for the past 30 years. A lot of that is down to competitive pricing.”
The negative repercussions of the economic downturn on the construction industry have been well documented but the sector appears to have turned the corner. Having safely negotiated the recession, NC is now well positioned to take advantage of the upturn in the sector.
“We were busy last year,” Noel, who worked as a machine operator before going out on his own, revealed. “You can certainly notice the lift in the industry and there appears to be extra money out there which has led to an increase in construction activity.
“We have a good variety of machinery e.g. JCBs, track machines, tractors and dumpers, site dumpers / excavators, sludge tankers, lorries, low-loaders, high-velocity patchers, road maintenance machines including brushes / road sweepers and road planers. I’m happy to keep going as we are and I think the future looks bright.”
Never one for resting on his laurels, 10 years ago Noel added another string to NC’s bow…
“We started doing housing renovations / refurbishments, extensions, re-let works, response maintenance, planned maintenance and DPG works on households and that has developed considerably.
“We expanded further into insulation work and started to provide energy upgrades to homes and other buildings in 2010/11 which includes procedures like pumping cavity walls, attic insulations and boiler upgrades etc. We are currently on the Local Authority Housing Framework.
“The increase in employment has steadily been increasing over the last eight years due to the company diversifying and expanding to take on these small to medium projects. We’ve 12 full-time employees working on that side of the business.
“We carry out as much as possible of the construction work using our own resources and we use reliable sub-contractors for specialist areas of work.”
This family run business has insulated numerous homes throughout Monaghan and beyond, bringing them up to the levels currently required for newly built homes, providing real savings and extra comfort for the occupants.
“At the time I thought there was a bit of an opening there so decided to diversify. Thankfully, it has turned out to have been a wise move. We started off gradually and built it up from there. We specialise in insulation, external cavity wall and attic insulation as well as revamps.
“We also install heat pumps as well, basically anything to do with energy efficiency.
“Our aim is to continue providing a reliable service and ensuring that our customers are satisfied with the work that we provide.”
