National recognition for MGF Electrical Supplies

24 Feb , 2026

Roscommon-based, family business MGF Electrical Supplies came up trumps at the 2025 EIFI (Electrical Industries Federation of Ireland) Awards, where founder Michael Fleming and his team were Highly Commended by their industry peers in the prestigious AEW Wholesaler of the Year category. Building Ireland touched base with Michael to find out more.

For coming up on 35 years, Michael Fleming has overseen the growth and development of MGF Electrical Supplies into an industry-leading, independently-owned wholesale electrical distributor of choice covering Roscommon and surrounding areas.

A man who has worked in the trade all his life, Michael fully understands the quality, choice and value his loyal customers demand, and has through hard work, energy and vision consistently delivered unbeatable products and service levels, establishing MGF Electrical Supplies as an award-winning partner to the domestic, commercial, agricultural and industrial sectors.

“It was absolutely brilliant to be highly commended at the EIFI Awards – it’s always nice to be recognised by the industry and we’re obviously delighted,” notes Michael, who set up the company in 1991. “I’ve been working in the industry since leaving school in 1977,” he continues. “I went out on my own as a sole trader in 1988, working initially from my home in Creggs, and then formed MGF Electrical Supplies in Roscommon town in ’91.”

Michael hasn’t looked back and MGF Electrical Supplies has grown in response to soaring demand for its excellent products and service. Having started out as a one-man operation, the business today generates employment for a team of seven, including the next generation, Michael’s son, Eugene, who as manager already oversees the day-to-day running of the business and will next year officially take the reins of what is now a very well-established and successful company.

MGF Electrical Supplies is very much a typical homegrown Irish family business. As well as Eugene, who has been part of the team for 15 years, Michael’s wife Mary and remaining children Tom, Michael Jnr., Louise and Laura have all played their part in making MGF so successful.

Stocking and sourcing all leading brands of electrical supplies, lighting and electrical tools, MGF Electrical provides a quick and efficient electrical supplies service from its well-appointed 10,000 sq ft warehouse in Roscommon town, carrying over 11,500 stock items for both trade and retail customers, including a large range of leading wiring accessories brands, lighting products, fire and burglar alarm equipment, LED fittings, lamps and a complete range of electrician’s tools, including a full range of electrical test instruments.

Meanwhile, sister company Roscommon Lighting was established in 2000 and carries a large stock of decorative lighting for indoor and outdoor use.

MGF Electrical Supplies supply a comprehensive supply of leading brands including Click, Hager, Telemecanique, Garo, prelux, Ansell, Ovia, Espi, Robus, S-line, Pirelli, etc. They are members of IEBG (the Irish Electrical Buying Group) – a major buying group consisting of 20 members with 29 outlets strategically located throughout Ireland, enabling them to source quality products at competitive prices to service the growing electrical markets locally and nationwide.

The fact that MGF Electrical Supplies will next year mark MGF Electrical Supplies’ 35th year in business speaks for itself. To what does the founder attribute this incredible success and longevity of his self-made business in such a notoriously competitive marketplace?

“Hard work – that’s definitely the main thing,” comes the rapid response. “A lot of hard graft has gone into this. Also, dedication and not wanting to fail. Failure was never an option, so you persevere and keep going.

“It hasn’t easy or plain sailing, but it’s what you know and what you do, so you just have to believe in yourself and persevere, focus on giving your customers the best possible service at all times.”

Down through the years, Michael has borne witness to a lot of changes in the industry. “Payments have moved from predominantly cash / cheque to cards and direct payment, while one of the biggest changes has been the transition from luminescent lighting to LED. Times keep changing and you have to move with them.

“Lighting is all LED now. We also started up the lighting shop, which is part of MGF, although a lot of the lighting we sell is commercial and industrial and that still goes through MGF rather than Roscommon Lighting.”

MGF Electrical Supplies has three delivery vans on the road daily delivering throughout County Roscommon as well as into North Galway, South Sligo, East Mayo, parts of Longford and oftentimes further afield.

“We pride ourselves on service, reliability and good products,” Michael vows. “Even though you also have to be competitive, it’s not always down to price. We are very proud of the service levels we give our customers and our knowledge of all the products – being able to talk to them and to listen when they talk to us.

“While we do have an online presence, in this line of work and especially for our generations, people still like to come into the shop and talk to you face to face, to see the product and get a demonstration or explanation of how it works.”

Elaborating further on the many qualities that have helped MGF Electrical Supplies become the go-to electrical wholesale distributor for Roscommon and neighbouring counties, Michael concludes:

“As well as our customers, we also value our suppliers. Both are equally important. Without our suppliers, we wouldn’t have a good product and then you wouldn’t have any customers! We deal only with the leading suppliers in the market, which gives our customers access to high-quality, dependable branded products that we can stand over.

“Ultimately, with any business, it all boils down to looking after your customers. That’s what we’ve always done and that’s how we will continue going forward.”
