Committed to quality

Cavan-based Sandar Construction  is a reputable family owned building contracting company within the Irish construction industry – and a name that is synonymous with quality workmanship. Director Leigh Jackson outlined the secrets of their success to Building Ireland.

Established by Jimmie Jackson in 1999, Sandar Ltd, trading as Sandar Construction, undertakes projects throughout Ireland across a broad range of sectors and have successfully completed projects in both the public and private sectors with the scope of work varying in type and size from multi-million projects to small and medium size contracts.

Sandar provides a highly professional, motivated construction team which is dedicated to achieving the highest standards of quality.

They pride themselves in their work and it is their aim to shun complacency to provide their clients with a quality service, completing projects to the highest standards, on time and within budget, through safe and environmentally friendly practices.

It is the policy of Sandar to ensure that the requirements and expectations of its clients are met in full, and by endeavouring to enhance the overall service to their clients to ensure that they are fully satisfied with the results.

To that end, Sandar applies a Quality Management System that is designed to maintain and continually improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the company’s performance. The management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2008.

The management within the company fully endorse the Quality Systems policy and controls, and are dedicated to ensure that the Quality System are continuously monitored and updated as necessary. The Quality System and its objectives are communicated and explained to all employees through sufficient training and development.

The system is systematically reviewed annually ensuring that a high standard of quality is continuously being delivered to their clients.

Sandar Construction’s track record of competence and experience as a building contractor is acknowledged in its inclusion into CIRI (Construction Industry Register of Ireland).

In addition, they also take a very disciplined approach to maintaining the environment and are committed to reducing the environmental impact from their work, a system which is ISO 14001;2004 accredited.

“The same effort goes into every project, no matter the size of the job,” explained Jimmie’s son Leigh who is a company director along with his brother Jonathon.

“We also pride ourselves on our attention detail. Quality drives us along with providing our clients with value for money. Cost wise, we’re always working with the client to ensure they achieve the best possible value for their projects.”

Sandar Construction is also dedicated to maintaining a safe working environment for all their employees and others who may be affected by their activities, which is implemented through their safety management system.

Their strong Health and Safety standards are recognised in their Safe-T-Cert accreditation.

Over the years, the skills and management base of the company has evolved and developed. They believe that management is about getting the right people for the particular task. Their success over the years is due to the dedication and commitment of both staff and workforce. The result is quality at every stage of construction.

“We employ 15 and many of our employees have been with the company from the start. They’re highly skilled and very trustworthy. They have a good understanding of what is expected of them and we, as directors, know what they expect of us. It works both ways. From our clients point of view, this puts the company in the perfect position to cater for their every need.”

Sandar has successfully gained an enviable reputation through building strong, trusting and long lasting associations with satisfied customers.

That’s why they are always in the frame when it comes to current projects like Drinan Community Centre and Sports Hall in Swords, on behalf of Fingal County Council, and the substantial restoration and refurbishment of Diswellstown House, an estate house in Castleknock.

Leigh adopts an optimistic tone when talk turned to the company’s future prospects…

“Thankfully, we’re busy at the minute and there is potential for more contracts down the line. As a company we aim to have 4 or 5 live projects ongoing at any one time. The hope would be that we will be in a position to take on more staff as those contracts come on board.

“We’re not confined to any one area in terms of where we are prepared to travel. We’re willing to work across the country but most of our work would be based in Dublin and surrounding area.

“We were fortunate enough all through the doom and gloom years that we had a few projects to work on. Nursing homes were a big thing from our point view.

“At the moment, there certainly are encouraging signs around Dublin and the greater Dublin area. There has been a big improvement in the construction sector but that has been slow to filter out to the rest of the country.

“There is, however, more construction activity going on in counties like Cavan and we would be hopeful in the months and years to come that things will balance out and the industry becomes quite active in proportion.”

Sandar Construction’s focus is on providing a first class service for all their clients, no matter how big or small.
