Established in 2017, Dermot Moyles Construction Ltd specialises in new builds, pyrite demolition and rebuild, extensions, refurbishment and all types of groundworks. Building Ireland touched base with Dermot Moyles himself to learn about the company – from its origins right through to current projects.
Business is thriving these days at Dermot Moyles Construction. Based in Kincon, near Ballina, the family-owned company serves Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and the surrounding areas. With a team of full-time staff and an extensive roster of trusted subcontractors, the business focuses on providing exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail across every project it delivers.
Founded by Dermot Moyles, a skilled construction professional with years of experience working in the UK and Dublin, the company initially focused on groundworks, extensions, and one-off house builds. However, with the rising demand for pyrite remediation, Dermot and his team swiftly adapted to specialise in this crucial area of construction, now completing the majority of their projects focused on addressing pyrite-related issues in homes and buildings.
“About 90% of our current work is in pyrite, and I don’t see that changing in the near future. We’ve built significant expertise in this area, providing clients with comprehensive solutions to remediate and restore affected properties,” said Dermot.
A key differentiator for Dermot Moyles Construction is its personal, family-oriented approach. Dermot’s wife, Nikki, manages office, while their son, Dermot Jnr, recently joined the team. “It’s a family business, and that personal touch is something our clients really appreciate,” Dermot explains. “We strive to make the process as smooth as possible, taking the time to understand the client’s needs and providing support whenever it’s needed.”
The Mayo native completed his Science degree in Galway before moving to England where he gained valuable experience in domestic and commercial projects. “I was working on medium to large construction contracts where I was managing sites which could vary from new build houses to multi-million pound warehouse industrial parks.”
On returning to Ireland after 12 years away, Dermot worked on a range of projects in both Dublin and Mayo before making the big decision to go out on his own. With his children still young, it was the right time to take the step, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Things weren’t plain sailing at first. With all his experience and contacts based in the UK, it took time for Dermot to make the connections he needed to grow the business. Working on contracts in Dublin while trying to establish the company back home proved challenging.
“To be honest, it was very hard at the start, and it took a long time to build things up.”
Switching to work with an established local firm and spending less time away on projects in Dublin enabled Dermot to develop the contacts and connections he needed to launch the business.
“I gradually got to know people and got to know subcontractors, and I just built it up myself that way. Once I had a good foundation to work from and a network of reliable contacts, I felt confident I could head off on my own.”
Fast forward to today and business is flourishing for Dermot Moyles Construction.
“Things are extremely busy at the moment, to be honest. Our schedule is full for this year so the projects I’m pricing now would be for early next year.”
From starting off in groundworks, extensions and one-off house builds to now specialising in pyrite remediation, things have come a long way for the company in eight years.
“Most of our current work is around North Mayo in Killala, Crossmolina and Ballina, and of the projects we have ongoing right now, all of them are pyrite.”
The scope of these pyrite projects varies, but the team have developed the experience and knowledge needed to tackle any issue effectively and sensitively. Dermot’s team are used to working on particularly complex projects, for example, when they have to demolish only one of a semi-detached house while leaving the next-door neighbour’s house intact. In most of the cases there is a shared chimney between the both houses which requires particular care.
“That’s always challenging, protecting an existing structure during demolition, but we have the expertise to deal with it. It’s a tense time for clients and their neighbours, but we pull out all the stops to get this part of the process completed quickly and efficiently, once it’s all sealed up again our clients and their neighbours are put at ease.”
It’s not hard to see how this company has become a thriving construction business in the West of Ireland with an excellent reputation among clients. We asked Dermot what he puts this success down to.
“Personally, I think it’s word of mouth. We’re fairly rural up here, and it’s your reputation that counts. You always want to hear a good report about someone before you sign on the dotted line. And when people have a good experience, they like to share it.
“We try to put ourselves in the client’s shoes. What might be a routine piece of work for us is often a stressful prospect for them. It’s about understanding that and guiding them through the process. We endeavour to try and take as much pressure off them as possible and keep their focus on the finished project. Some clients need more support and I am always happy to spend time talking things through and reassuring them when required.”
For now, Dermot is happy to maintain the current business model as it is, but, looking ahead, he says that future growth is certainly something he’s considering.
“Our schedule is fully booked for the remainder of the year, which we’re very happy about. Looking ahead, expansion is definitely in our plans — I’m eager to grow the business and bring a few more team members on board. We’re actively working toward making that a reality.”
