Building Ireland caught up with Contracts Manager Brian McCarthy to hear about the company’s nomination in the ‘Residential Social & Affordable Up To €5m’ at the upcoming Irish Construction Excellence Awards.
Business is thriving at JD Buckley Construction Ltd, and that’s exactly how founder John Buckley and his team intend to keep it.
From its base at Kilmeedy Castle, in Millstreet, the company has carved out a reputation for reliability, consistency and quality—qualities that continue to underpin its steady growth in an increasingly competitive construction landscape.
Part of the wider Buckley Group, a family-owned enterprise offering a diverse range of construction services, JD Buckley Construction has grown steadily since becoming a limited company in 2010.
Its portfolio reflects a broad capability, with successfully delivered projects spanning residential, commercial, and public sector works.
For Contracts Manager Brian McCarthy, who has been with the company since 2013, that steady progression is no accident. Instead, it is the result of a deliberate strategy focused on consistency, careful planning and maintaining strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
That philosophy is reflected in the company’s diverse workload. In addition to main contracting, JD Buckley Construction undertakes a significant volume of maintenance works for local authorities, including Cork County Council, Cork City Council, Kerry County Council, and Limerick County Council.
Alongside this, it has also developed a strong reputation in energy upgrade works, an area of increasing importance as Ireland continues to prioritise sustainability and carbon reduction across its building stock.
“Then we’ve got our own developments where we acquire sites to design and build our own housing developments. We have three of our own developments ready to go at the minute,” said Brian.
Among its current pipeline are a number of social housing developments in North Cork, a sector in which JD Buckley Construction has built considerable expertise.
This balanced approach—combining public sector contracts with private development—provides both stability and opportunity. It allows the company to maintain a consistent workflow while also investing in projects that align with its long-term vision.
In addition to its own developments, the company continues to secure competitive tenders. A recently awarded project for eight social houses for Cork County Council is set to begin shortly, while design-and-build schemes in North Cork further underline the firm’s versatility.
Recent completions—including social housing schemes in Rathcormac and Macroom—demonstrate the company’s ability to deliver projects efficiently and to a high standard.
It is the Sleaveen Road development in Macroom—An Clós—that has brought national recognition, earning JD Buckley Construction a nomination at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards. Entered in the ‘Residential Social & Affordable Up To €5m’ category, the project highlights the company’s technical expertise and commitment to quality.
“We started in mid-April 2024 and finished in August 2025. The value was €3.3m,” McCarthy notes.
The project itself was far from straightforward. Located on a narrow, steeply sloping brownfield site adjacent to existing occupied properties, it presented significant logistical and engineering challenges. Limited access from a busy steep, urban road added further complexity, requiring careful planning and coordination throughout the construction process.
The development comprises a mix of residential units, including four two-bedroom townhouses, two two-bedroom apartments, and ten one-bedroom apartments, arranged along a linear courtyard. Delivering this scheme required extensive underground services and utility connections, as well as the construction of significant retaining walls and stepped foundations to accommodate the site’s gradient.
Despite these challenges, the project was completed on time, on budget, with an exemplary safety record and an near passive A2 energy rating, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
Beyond the technical achievement, An Clós represents a broader vision for urban development. By transforming a constrained infill site into a high-quality residential scheme, the project contributes to placemaking and townscape enhancement in Macroom. It stands as a positive example of how underutilised or derelict sites can be reimagined to create vibrant, sustainable communities.
“Compact urban development, placemaking, and improving the townscape are really important for sites like that,” McCarthy explained. “It shows what can be done, even in difficult locations.”
At the core of JD Buckley Construction’s success is its emphasis on collaboration. Building strong relationships with clients from the outset is a priority, ensuring that projects run smoothly and that expectations are aligned at every stage.
“We try to excel at getting on with the clients from day one and being as collaborative with them as possible. That makes a huge difference when it comes to delivering projects successfully,” said the Contracts Manager.
Leadership also plays a crucial role. JD Buckley Construction’s senior management of John Buckley and Brian Mc Carthy bring extensive design experience to the business, enabling the company to approach projects with a deeper understanding of both construction and design considerations. This integrated perspective has proven particularly valuable in design-and-build projects.
In recent years, the company has further strengthened its operations through the achievement of key industry accreditations. ISO 9001, 45001, and 14001 certifications have been secured, reflecting its commitment to quality management, health and safety, and environmental standards.
