Building Ireland touched base with its Managing Director Sean Kavanagh recently to hear more about the company’s current projects and what he feels sets the business apart from the competition.
Business is good these days at James’s Street Steel Ltd and the plan for Sean Kavanagh (Managing Director), his wife Jolanta Kavanagh (Head of Transport and Production) and the entire team at Greenogue Business Park in Rathcoole is to try and keep things that way for the foreseeable.
Set-up by Sean’s parents Joe snr and Maureen Kavanagh in 1974, the company today employs 45 direct staff and is a specialist in rebar cut and bend manufacturing, offering competitive rates for both rebar and mesh reinforcement.
It also has one of the largest rebar yards in Ireland, carrying a stock of over 15,000 tonnes of rebar and coil, and 3,000 tonnes of mesh.
Building Ireland caught up with Sean Kavanagh to discuss the projects that the business is currently immersed and the overall hopes for the Dublin company going forward.
“The last couple of years business has been very good,” he said. “Towards the end of last year and into this year, it’s getting a little more competitive. There’s not as much as there was back in 2019.”
Despite a slightly more competitive market, demand for residential construction remains strong. Sean noted that much of the current work is residential, but that industrial infrastructure is essential to support it.
Reflecting on past market cycles, he added: “Back in 2006, it was only residential, then the recession hit. There’s a feeling of the same at the minute out there, but we don’t know. We’re keeping an eye on it, but for now, the demand is significant.”
James’s Street Steel Ltd is involved in a diverse portfolio of projects across the Dublin region.
The company works with high-profile clients including Walls, Liffey Contracts, Murphy International, Collen Construction, GEM Group, Townlink, Montane Commercial Developments, HML Plant, Apex Hub, Kilwex, Adman Group, and Clancy Construction, handling everything from residential developments and hotels to hospitals such as the Mater, Beaumont and Beacon Hospitals.
“Those would be the main projects at the minute, and there’s lots of other smaller ones on as well,” Sean explained.
Recent projects include residential developments in Dunshaughlin and Newtown Mount Kennedy, commercial work in Ballymount and Dublin Airport, Dublin Port Bert Project and a series of hospital projects throughout the city.
The variety of work reflects the company’s ability to adapt to different client needs, from fast-turnaround residential jobs to highly technical, large-scale commercial projects.
While James’s Street Steel Ltd has grown substantially, it remains a family-run business at its core.
Sean’s leadership is complemented by Jolanta’s oversight of transport, production, and accounting. She also ensures the company complies with multiple ISO standards, covering sustainability, environmental management and quality control.
“We tick all the boxes, and we’re in Dublin. About 90% of our work is based here, and we’ve reduced delivery from five days to three on any order,” Sean stated.
This focus on efficiency and compliance has helped the company maintain a competitive edge, while also providing clients with the confidence that projects will be completed on time and to specification. It also reflects a broader commitment to sustainability, something that has become increasingly important in Ireland’s construction industry.

Sean acknowledges that the market can be unpredictable, drawing on past experiences to guide the company’s strategy.
“It’s mostly residential, but you need the industrial infrastructure and that stuff to go with it. But, at the minute, it’s only residential, which there’s a huge demand for,” he said.
