For more than 30 years Logden Construction has been a byword for residential and commercial building excellence in the west of Ireland. We travelled to Westport in County Mayo and touched base with hands-on managing director Ronan Higgins to learn more about an industry-leading family business with the golden touch!
Established in November, 1995, Logden Construction has built up a stunning portfolio of exceptional residential and commercial projects down through the years, nay decades, and continues to excel in terms of consistently delivering top-quality workmanship that invariably exceeds client expectations.
A personal touch is provided on each and every project and Logden Construction ticks all the boxes in terms of quality, dependability, versatility and – perhaps most importantly of all – innate enthusiasm. Within minutes of meeting MD Ronan Higgins, whose father-in-law Hugh Golden set the company up almost 31 years ago – it becomes abundantly apparent that the Mayo man is imbued with a real passion for all things construction.
This in turn translates into a fantastic final product every time, be it a new build or retrofit home, extension / refurbishment, an industrial warehouse, commercial unit, GAA complex or school building. The results always speak for themselves and that’s why Logden Construction has not only survived the test of time but continues to thrive on the back of regular repeat business and positive word of mouth from an ever-expanding base of satisfied customers.
“As a family business, the personal touch is a big thing with us and that goes back to Hugh and his wife Sally, who always went out of their way to make themselves available to customers and to communicate with them at all times. Since taking over the business, one of my priorities has been to make sure we keep that line of communication open.”
Hugh was initially a plasterer by trade, working extensively for a contractor in England before setting up his own company back home, while Ronan served his time as a cabinet maker and also spent a few years doing groundworks in England. One of his claims to fame in this capacity is having had the opportunity to work on the development of Liverpool FC’s training ground in Kirkby.
Since taking the reins of Logden Construction, Ronan has been proud to build on the outstanding legacy created by his father-in-law. “He was the one who started the business and he’s the one who pushed it on from strength to strength,” he confirms. “The fact that we’ve been around for 30 years is all down to him. He did all the hard lifting through some difficult times for the industry, and I want to continue on with the high standards he set. He led by example and that’s the example I’ll follow, looking after clients and making sure all projects are carried out to the most exacting standards.”
Maintaining such standards isn’t easy; it takes organisation, meticulous record keeping and efficiency. “That is all down to Sally. Her attention to detail and accuracy in managing all operational duties is second to none. She’s there to rely on for any queries and can always be counted on for meeting deadlines.”
Elaborating on the key to Logden Construction’s enduring success and longevity, Ronan makes special mention to the excellent team around him, which includes a number of highly-skilled in-house tradesmen, pulling together seamlessly to deliver superb turnkey finishes…
“It’s about reliability and clear communication. Again, going back to Hugh … always leaving a good product behind, having a strong team, and providing a good back-up service. When you do all of these, you won’t go wrong. We have an outstanding team of ten lads here at the minute and can cover pretty much everything in-house.
“The mechanical and electrical elements are subcontracted out but the rest is done in-house. When it comes to subbies, we only work with the best and use the same lads time and time again because you know you can depend on them.
“It’s no secret that a construction company is only going to be as good as its staff. It’s getting harder to get trades and this is an issue for everybody in the industry at the moment. We have one apprentice on our books presently and a lot of long-term staff as well as top-class subbies. When you get good men, you have to hold onto them.”
While the current economic climate isn’t exactly friendly to independent family businesses, Logden Construction is looking at a busy order book for the remainder of 2026: “We’re busy and getting a nice mix of work,” says Ronan. “This year we’ve done new build houses, refurbs of existing homes and some large commercial projects too, so a wide range and scope of projects.”
With regards to the catchment area covered, all the work is in Mayo, including a series of retrofit schemes on homes for Mayo County Council. “We’re fortunate to have a steady stream of local work and that’s obviously in everybody’s interest,” comments Ronan, whose objective for the future of Logden Construction is to consolidate the business by continuing to do what they do best:
“We’ll keep trying to push it on and take the business to the next level,” he states. “We’re very versatile in what we can do … we’ve recently done a new warehouse for The Tile Warehouse and also a new commercial building for The Soft Bedding Company. We’re also the main contractor on the full redevelopment of a new pitch and dressing rooms for Westport GAA, which is a nice one to be involved in locally.”
With all the pressures that inevitably come with the territory, is it possible to enjoy the responsibility of running a building contracting company in 2026? “You have to. We have had challenging days, and will again, but we do enjoy it by and large. When you go back and see a finished project that you can be proud of, that can be very satisfying.”
