M&P Mechanical Ltd. struck gold at Ireland’s 2017 Plumbing & Heating Awards, garnering the District Heating Project of the Year for the Lighthouse Apartments, Dublin as well as a highly commended Mechanical Project of the Year category for their outstanding work at ABP Foods, Nenagh. We caught up with MD Mark O’Rourke to find out more about a relatively-new but highly-accomplished company that has really hit the ground running.

This was very much in evidence when they scooped two major prizes at Ireland’s 2017 Plumbing & Heating Awards – District Heating Project of the Year for the Lighthouse Apartments at Georges Place, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin and a commendation for a new mechanical services installation at ABP Foods, Grange, Nenagh, County Tipperary.
The Lighthouse Apartment Complex is an 83-unit apartment block. The apartments are spilt between five cores and stand nine storeys tall. Each apartment was built to the highest standard of air tightness for efficiency and low running cost, each with fully insulated heating and water services pipework. Each apartment boasts fully pressurized plumbing, concealed sanitary fixing and high efficiency radiators.
The scope of M&P Mechanical’s work for developer and main contractor Shannon Homes Group Dublin, owned by Mr. Frank Fahy, and designed by consultant Coakley McElligott included: the supply and installation of heating 1st & 2nd fix; supply and installation of plumbing 1st & 2nd fix; supply and installation of sanitary ware; supply and installation of soil and waste water pipework; supply and installation of rainwater pipework.
Meanwhile, the award-winning project for ABP Food Group, at their Nenagh plant included the full refurbishment of the mechanical system. The process area was completed using 316 grade stainless steel, which was pre-insulated off site to improve delivery programme. Hygiene being a key factor in all equipment selections, radiant panels were used to heat public spaces. New supply systems were installed for the boning hall. Due to space limitation, all the services were installed on the rooftop of the building with the pre-insulation pipework.
During the project, a gas supply was made available by Bord Gais Networks, and a new installation of gas services began. With standing gas pressure at approximately 300mbar, a schedule 40 carbon steel pipe was selected. With two steam boilers and a new CHP onsite a 10” diameter pipework was required. The on-site skip supplies 300mbar of gas to the main line with locate regulators at each plant room to control the pressure before it enters the building.
During the project, the water softener system was replaced. The new system was designed to supply continuous water at 40cub per hour 24 hours a day. This required double safe fall over systems and interlocked warning systems to ensure water quality to the plant at all time.
Mark O’Rourke, managing director of M&P Mechanical, made the hard decision to set up the company in 2011, and with the support from his wife Pauline, the company’s second director, M&P Mechanical was formed. Just six years on from its inception, the company has gone from strength to strength.
With over 35 years in the industry, Mark brings a vast amount of experience with him, and this is evident in Mark’s large customer base. Mark’s experience and keen eye for quality has ensured continuous and growing business with all his customers.
In 2013, Mark employed Anthony O’Conaill, the company’s current senior operations manager. Bringing with him an engineering and financial background and eye for detail, Anthony is involved in the day to day running of the company.
Mark was thrilled to leave the Mansion House with two Irish Plumbing & Heating Awards: “I was ecstatic,” he confirms. “To be honest, we went there thinking we would do well to get a mention, so to come away with two prestigious awards was fantastic. Credit to the great workforce I have around me. The work has to be completed to the highest possible standard and all credit to our guys on the ground for achieving that every time.”
Referring to the Lighthouse Apartments, Mark adds: “We put in a complete district heating system, with one centralised plantroom heating all of the apartments. It is a very efficient system, having previously installed a similar system with 1MW of boilers and 30kW of CHP for a 100-unit complex called St. Raphaela’s Apartments, Upper Kilmacud Road, Stillorgan for Frank Fahy of Shannon Homes Group Dublin. Mr. Fahy is a key customer for us in Dublin. And with a good working relationship with Mr. Fahy’s consultant engineer Richard McElligott, of McElligott Consulting, the delivery of the projects is welcome every-time.
“At the moment, we’re halfway through a 250-apartment development called The Hermitage on the Malahide Road, for Shannon Homes Group Dublin, another full district heating system which is due to be completed in December.”
Other notable recent projects include a complete district heating system with 226 units for Cosgrave Development in Dun Laoghaire delivered earlier this year. Also recently completed was a full refurbishment incorporating a brand-new heating system at the Chief State Solicitor’s Office for Lynskey Engineering. “That was a seven-month project, all done during night shifts working around a live, high-security building”.
“In OPW work, we carried out a new gas line upgrade at DkIT last year and also heating upgrade at St Paul’s Secondary School in Walkinstown (150 new radiators and two 600kW high-efficiency boilers) and a heating and home economics upgrade at St Louis Secondary School, Dundalk.”
Such is the expertise and professionalism invested into each and every project, that the contracts keep coming in. For Iarnrod Eireann, a new pumping station has been installed for storm water and rainwater on the Phoenix Park tunnel project (main contractor, KN Network Group) as well as a full office fit-out of a three storey over basement office Curzon House incorporating new air handling unit (AHU), ventilation systems and new gas services installation.
“Urban Life is a new house building and property development company with its offices based in Drogheda and we have four domestic developments ongoing for them at the moment between Dundalk and Drogheda, comprising approximately 400 houses,” Mark continues. “We are also working on a 150-unit housing development in Blackrock, for Mr Phil Reilly of Shannon Homes Drogheda, which is a high-efficiency air to water heat pump installation.
“We are also near completion stage of a 500kW total output CHP installation at The Clayton Hotel in Dublin City Centre as well as a 250kW unit at the Carrigaline Court Hotel in Cork.”
M&P Mechanical Ltd. have also successfully installed high-efficiency district heating systems on a 79-apartment complex at Shieling Square on Howth Road for October Management and an 83-unit apartment development at Trimbleston, Goatstown Road for Sorohan Builders.
The trust of a host of main contractors and the skilled workmanship of his staff have been instrumental in the success of Mark O’Rourke’s high-achieving mechanical services company. “Frank Fahy was the first main contractor to show confidence in me and the Shannon Homes Group Dublin really put us on the map,” he concludes.
“We also have fantastic employees, who are dedicated and professional from top to bottom. We complete every job to the highest standard and that results in a lot of repeat business and referrals. We put absolutely everything into each and every project to try to make sure we also get the next job. We are very busy in Dublin now and the North East has also opened up again in the last 12-18 months, with a lot of work coming up in Dundalk and Drogheda, so we are very confident about the future.”
