Founded in 2005, Custy Construction Ltd offers its clients the complete package in covering all aspects of a project from start to finish. Building Ireland learned more from founder and Managing Director, Dermot Custy about the Clare-based company.
Business has been booming as of late at Custy Construction Ltd and the plan for Dermot Custy and his team of 40 staff is to continue producing quality projects on time and within budget.
Based right outside the town of Ennis, Clare, the company works closely with clients, architects and engineers to ensure that the highest quality standard of finish is achieved in a safe and timely manner.
Whatever you require, Custy Construction can work with you to provide confidence and reliability in its work which ranges from groundwork, block work, roofing, carpentry, plastering and plumbing/electrical work.
They provide their clients all around the Munster region with services in private houses, renovations, extensions, maintenance, commercial, civil works and conservation.
Dermot Custy himself has over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry, having first started off as a carpenter.
The Co Clare native was a sole trader from 2001 to 2005 before taking the decision to set up Custy Construction Ltd and he hasn’t looked back since, as he told Building Ireland recently.
“Basically, we’re a building and civil engineering company that specialises on house building,” Dermot outlined.
“We also do a lot of pharmaceutical work in Limerick as well and have a housing scheme in Clare for the Clare County Council.
“We’re on school builds as well but right now above all we have a lot of private houses that we’re working on. We just completed a housing development in Bunratty which included six high end houses.”
The origins of the business date back to Dermot’s days in the carpentry trade and, having gained some valuable experience along the way, he saw fit to go out on his own in 2001.
Four years later, Custy Construction was a limited company and despite the economic downturn hitting around ‘07/08, the company was still able to grow year on year to the point it’s at today.
Employing 40 staff after starting with a handful 14 years previous is for sure an impressive feat and even a testament to the excellent work the company has carried out since its inception.
“I had served my time as a carpenter and, as the years went by, I eventually took the decision to go out on my own and set-up in 2005,” said Dermot.
“When the downturn hit a few years later it didn’t really hurt us all that much. We worked through it with extensions and that and, to be honest, we were never really that quiet, thankfully. We worked through and business right now is maybe as good as it’s ever been for us.”
One of the most recent projects which Custy Construction delivered was a €660,000 upgrade and extension on the Kilkee Fire Station in Co Clare.
In order to facilitate the project, the fire station was moved to Dough and its construction involved an extension to the rear of the existing building including a new Drying Room and BA Servicing / Compressor Room.
It also saw the provision of a lecture room and kitchenette on a new first floor, new Mezzanine floor for storage, female shower and toilet facilities with disabled access and two roller shutter doors.
The project started in Spring 2018, after Clare County Council has signed the contracts, and was fully completed by the beginning of this year.
Dermot himself was delighted with how the project turned out and said it all combined to make 2018 an “extremely busy” year for the business.
“Last year was extremely busy for us,” he stated.
“We’re getting repeat business here as well as one off business, so we can’t complain. Our main clients would be the likes of Regeneron Pharmaceutical, Kirby Group and Clare County Council and then you’d have private one off houses too.”
It seems 2019 has followed the same trend for Custy Construction as they continue to work on different projects throughout the southern province.
So what has been the secret to success?
The way Dermot sees it, good word often travels fast and over the last 14 years his company has earned itself a glowing reputation for its work all over Munster.
“It’s our reputation on the work that we do,” he said.
“We’ve all the trades and have a reputation for keeping our sites tidy and I’d like to think that we’re further ahead with Health & Safety than other companies our size.”
Looking towards the second half of 2019, the Managing Director is keen for business to continue flowing steadily.
However, should larger size projects be added to the list he won’t shy away from them either.
“Hopefully we just continue to stay busy. If business grows it grows – we have the appetite here for it,” he stated.
“I suppose we’ve been adding staff year on year now for the past five years, so if we have to add more again this year or next year we will.”
