Finna Construction – one of the best in the West

9 Feb , 2021

Finna Construction Ltd is a successful construction company based in Co. Mayo with a wealth of experience across the whole spectrum of the industry. The contractor’s belief in providing dedicated close attention to client requirements and its flexibility during construction has stood it in good stead for nearly two decades.

The family-run business has gone from strength to strength since it was founded by husband-and-wife Vincent and Concepta Lydon in 2003. Finna Construction became a limited company three years later and has earned a reputation for outstanding workmanship, professionalism, reliability and a proven ability to complete every job it undertakes on time and within budget.

Based in Cong, Co. Mayo, where many of the scenes for ‘The Quiet Man’ movie were shot nearly 70 years ago and named after a local lake, Finna Construction boasts an extensive portfolio of construction projects varying in both nature and complexity. The firm has successfully completed projects for private and public sector clients and has experience in commercial, retail, residential and maintenance work.

Finna Construction’s range of clients has enhanced its management of construction projects as it has dealt with numerous scenarios and tailored its construction management techniques to suit. The company is dedicated to ensuring its on-site performance exceeds clients’ expectations with its construction teams being supported by quality, health & safety, finance and administration personnel. Finna Construction has fully documented and implemented quality and health & safety management systems which have achieved ISO 9001 Quality Certification and Safe T Cert accreditation.

The company prioritises a safe working environment for staff, sub-contractors, consultants and end-users, and is committed to eliminating risk that may be to the detriment of its employees and partners alike. It constantly strives to instil a safety awareness on all projects and to comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Finna Construction has an exemplary safety record and believes in working closely with all of its partners to ensure the safest possible environment during construction.

“We are constantly investing in the right people, health & safety, quality management systems and the latest technology to stay ahead of the game. We enjoy an excellent rapport and working relationship with our suppliers, sub-contractors and clients, which leads to a lot of repeat business,” Concepta Lydon explains.

“We pride ourselves on a high-quality finish delivered on time and within agreed budgets. We believe our close attention to detail and our commitment to resolving issues to the complete satisfaction of our clients is what sets us apart from the rest.”

A carpenter by trade, Vincent Lydon has overseen the growth of the company which now employs 22 directly. Concepta cannot stress enough the importance of having a strong team around you.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without our management and staff. They’re experienced, competent and highly-motivated people who deliver quality products time and again. It’s a team effort and we are very lucky to have them.”

Finna Construction boasts an impressive client list which includes local authorities, Department of Education, OPW (Office of Public Works), private and commercial customers. Fire stations have been something of a speciality for the family business which has completed such projects in Mountbellew, Loughrea and Carraroe (An Cheathru Rua) for Galway County Council and in Ferbane for Offaly County Council. Finna Construction was also awarded the contract for major upgrade works at Ballinasloe Garda Station two years ago. This €2 million project involved the construction of a new public office and new cell block and was carried out under the Government’s Building and Refurbishment Programme for 2016-2021.

Galway County Council are one of Finna Construction’s main clients and the Mayo contractor is currently developing 14 homes at the Fairgreen, Roundstone for the local authority as part of the ‘Rebuilding Ireland’ strategy. This comes after Finna Construction was also the main contractor on a smaller social housing scheme (Na Clocha Rua) in Carraroe.

“We do a lot of work for Galway County Council, including social housing ‘voids’ which we retrofit for them and turn them into energy efficient homes,” Concepta continues.

“We’ve also carried out social housing projects for Limerick City Council at Burke Avenue and for Mayo County Council in Kilmaine. We’ve been very busy with local authority projects. We’re also kept busy with maintenance work and have separate crews working for Galway County Council, the OPW and GRETB (Galway and Roscommon Education and Training).”

In addition, Finna Construction is currently carrying out improvements to St Joseph’s CBS, Nenagh and Coola Post Primary School, Sligo on behalf of the Department of Education. A recent commercial project involved the development of a new office block for Cong-based civil engineering contractor P&D Lydon Ltd.

At the time of writing, Finna Construction had just signed two new significant projects. The first, for the OPW, will involve transforming the old library in Tuam into a new DEASP office. The second project will see the reinstatement of the college canteen at GMIT. Both jobs have start dates in early August.

Concepta concludes by thanking Finna Construction’s clients for their continued support.

“We have loyal clients who have been with us for years. We’re grateful for their business and I’m sure they appreciate the job we do for them as well. Our goal at all times is to not only meet our customers’ requirements, but to exceed them.”
