Company director and former All-Ireland plastering champion Gabriel Cummins explains more.
Based in Claremorris, Co Mayo, Cummins and Cummins Ltd have a wealth of experience in the building trade. Explaining the background to the company, which is a registered CIRI (Construction Industry Register Ireland) contractor and member of CIF (Construction Industry Federation), Gabriel reveals: “We were specialists plastering contractors up until 2007, when the downturn came the only way for us to stay in business was to become building contractors. My father Tom, who is now retired, and I set up Cummins & Cummins Ltd three years prior. It wasn’t easy and times were hard but we pulled through.
“My brother John is involved in the company. We employ five people directly and use the same tried and trusted sub-contractors on all our projects.”

Cummins and Cummins Ltd provide a complete construction service, from groundworks to turnkey, specialises in one off new build, passive houses, office/retail fit outs and school extensions.”
A €1 million-plus extension to Mount Saint Michael Secondary School in Claremorris in 2019 / early 2020 represents one of Cummins & Cummins Ltd’s biggest projects to date. The scope of works included demolition and groundworks, construction of three new classrooms, extensions to home economics room, principal’s office and reception as well as fire safety upgrade works to existing building.
“We finished the school extension in February, just before the first lockdown happened. We were very lucky to get such a project, especially with it being so close to home,” Gabriel continues
The Claremorris contractor is currently building social houses in Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon for Roscommon County Council, a one-off 2,500 sq. ft. house in Galway city and revamping of apartments in Galway. It is also carrying out a refit out to Centra Bellaghy, Charlestown, Co. Mayo and building two new enterprise centres in Ballinlough for Killtullagh Enterprise, Co. Roscommon and in Claremorris, Co. Mayo for Clar IRD.
In addition, in the coming weeks Cummins & Cummins Ltd will be starting a major renovation and extension of the Ballyhaunis Community Hall. Gabriel and his team are undertaking the internal upgrade and extension of the 80-year-old hall, including a new kitchen, extension to the stage, toilet and dressing-room upgrades along with a new heating system. The project engineer is Eugene Waldron of Waldron & Associates, Claremorris.
The hall hosts a variety of events and activities each year, including plays, fitness classes, table tennis, choir practice, youth club, Parent & Toddler group and much more. Known locally as the Parochial Hall, the facility was handed over to Ballyhaunis Community Council by Ballyhaunis parish on a 35-year lease.
