Established in 2009, John Doherty Construction Ltd is a leading building and restoration contractor based in Clonmany, Co. Donegal. Specialising in renovations, extensions and restorations, the family-run business has also successfully completed a number of new builds in and around the Inishowen Peninsula.

Thinking of extending or renovating your home / property or perhaps building your ideal home? Then look no further than John Doherty Construction who can turn your dream into a reality.

With 25 years’ experience in the trade, John can cater for all your construction needs. After working alongside his brother Martin as a block-layer both locally and all over the country, he set up his own company and has seen it go from strength to strength over the past 12 years. He is joined in the business by his wife Marielaine, son Charlie, who is an electrician by trade, and a small team of carpenters, block-layers and groundworks personnel, who deliver a cohesive approach on every project they undertake.

Outstanding workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of this well-run and fully-certified operation. Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so than in this COVID-19 age. From concept to completion, John and his team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.

Whether your next project is an extension, renovation, restoration or new build, John Doherty Construction’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Inishowen contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from satisfied clients.

“We always try to do our best for the customer,” John says.

“We’re very hands-on and you’ll always find me on-site. Our work is second to none. We pride ourselves on our superb craftsmanship, our collaborative and professional approach as well as our exemplary safety record.

“We sub-contract the plastering, roofing, plumbing and electrical to the same tried and trusted tradesmen. By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with architects and engineers, and using only the very best building products, we’re able to deliver the highest quality construction to our clients.

“Renovations, extensions and new builds in that order are our bread and butter,” he adds.

Examples of the contractor’s exceptional work can be found all over Donegal. “While we generally stick to Inishowen, which is in the north of the county, we’ve gone as far south as Donegal town. We’ll go wherever the work is,” the affable builder explains.

John Doherty Construction is currently working on a number of private projects along with a new indoor Astroturf pitch at Trawbreaga Park, which is the home of Rasheney FC. The Doherty team also recently carried out upgrade works to the Applegreen Service Station on the outskirts of Buncrana.

As a specialist restoration and conservation building contractor, John Doherty Construction has earned an enviable reputation for restoring old properties to their former glory. “It’s a very interesting area and something we would like to do more of. I enjoy it more than general contracting, but sadly the demand for restoration work isn’t as great.”

John’s first restoration project in 2012 involved carrying out repairs to Carrickabraghy Castle, which is located on a rocky outcrop at the north-western extremity of the Isle of Doagh, not far from Clonmany. The iconic O’Doherty Castle was in ruins and in imminent danger of collapse before a local group chaired by Marius Harkin launched a campaign to save it. A grant from the National Rural Development LEADER Programme and over €30,000 from local fundraising events and contributions from supporters allowed the first phase of the work of conservation to be completed.

Since then, John Doherty Construction has undertaken further restoration projects in Clonmany (Straid Church), Letterkenny (Cathedral Quarter), Rathmullan (Rathmullan Friary) and Ramelton (Castle Street). Situated between Clonmany village and the Glenevin Waterfall Park, Straid Church (St Columba’s) was built in 1772 and is an integral part of the social, cultural and ecclesiastical history of the parish.

With the aid of funding from The Heritage Council and Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, John Doherty Construction has helped to regenerate the historical Church Lane in Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter. In 2018, the contractor featured on the popular RTE TV show ‘The Great House Revival’, which focused on the restoration of a cottage in Lenankeel that goes back to the time of The Famine.

John would like to take this opportunity to thank his customers and suppliers for their continued support, and his staff for their hard work, dedication and expertise.
