PJ Loughlin Builders Ltd has been synonymous with high-quality construction for over 50 years. Based in Shrule, Co. Mayo, the family-run business provides a complete range of services, from site development, superstructures and demolition to turnkey finishes at handover.
Specialising in commercial, educational, restoration and civil works, the contractor operates mainly along the west coast, but has worked on projects both nationwide and abroad. The business was founded by PJ Loughlin in 1970 and became a limited company in 2000. While PJ and his wife Kathleen are now retired, they are still largely involved in an advisory capacity. Their son Kieran fronts operations with his wife, also Kathleen, and their passion for the building trade is evident through their own children, some of whom are now qualified in engineering, quantity surveying, construction economics and project management. They have10 direct employees who are supported by the same tried and trusted subcontractors, including MG Electrical, Morris Electrical, Lynch Construction Services, Stephen Walsh Construction & Maintenance and Stephen Monaghan Carpentry.
PJ Loughlin Builders undertake a range of works such as protected structures using traditional building methods, extensions, refurbishments and general maintenance duties. Clients range from home owners and developers to local authorities, public bodies and sporting organisations.
“My brothers and I were always out on building sites when we were children. It was part of our upbringing,” Kieran proudly explains.
Kieran’s brother Robert also continues in the same line of work where he now lives in Malawi, Eastern Africa. “The experience he gained from a young age working in the family business stands to him now as he oversees the construction of schools for those less fortunate.”
Kieran’s daughter Nicole managed a campaign of fundraising events here in Ireland to be able to fund the building of a school in Malawi in 2019,
“We were then fortunate enough to be able to visit the project and attend the opening of the building. Seeing the next generation become passionate about the same line of work is a fantastic experience,” he says.
“We’re a long time in this game and have earned a strong reputation for high-quality work. We have our own plant and machinery, and can turn our hand to anything. There isn’t a school in the west of Ireland that we haven’t worked on over the years. We’re a well-established building and civil engineering contractor with a broad client base.”
The Mayo firm employs a dedicated team of professionals and craftsmen who work to a consistently high standard to deliver buildings of the highest quality. Outstanding workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of PJ Loughlin Builders. Health & Safety is at the core of operations, and never more so than since the Covid-19 pandemic. From concept to completion, Kieran and his top-class team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.
Whether you’re a public or private client, PJ Loughlin Builders’ one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from design teams and scores of satisfied clients.
By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with its design teams, and using only the very best building products, this fully insured CIRI contractor is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients. In over half a century of trading, PJ Loughlin Builders has acquired an ever-growing list of clients who have experienced the company’s straightforward and professional approach based on partnership and teamwork. The contractor has successfully completed numerous projects up to €3million in value. It is currently the main contractor on a €1.5million light industrial alterations project for Udaras Na Gaeltachta in Na Forbacha, Co. Galway. Other current / recent projects include the reroofing of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Shrule, a two-classroom extension in Renmore, a carpark and fully-lit walkway for Ardrahan GAA club, a walkway for Shrule/Glencorrib GAA club and a large renovation project of a historic Chateau based in the Limousin region of France.
PJ Loughlin Builders has also erected tennis air dome facilities in Salthill and Templeogue, and a sprung building which is used as a GP hall for a variety of sports at Salerno Secondary School in Salthill.
Asked how his company has coped in the face of rising material costs and hyper inflation, Kieran replies: “It’s been difficult, but we’re lucky to have a very good relationship with our suppliers who keep us informed of any potential price increases. You just have to get on with things as best you can. The bills and wages still have to be paid.
“Hopefully, we’re coming out of the worst of it. On the plus side, we’re very busy and long may that continue to be the case.”
Passionate about construction, PJ Loughlin Builders would like to take this opportunity to thank its clients, suppliers and design teams for their continued support as well as its staff and subcontractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise.
