Award-winning excellence at McGuinness Mechanical Engineering

16 Oct, 2026

McGuinness Mechanical Engineering Ltd has established itself as one of Ireland’s leading mechanical services contractors through a combination of sustained growth, investment in its people and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Operating from its headquarters in Newry, Co Down, alongside an office in Donabate,Co Dublin  and with a strong presence across the island of Ireland, the company has built an enviable reputation for delivering complete mechanical packages on residential, commercial and mixed-use developments.

Originally established in 2012 as McGuinness Plumbing Ltd, the business has evolved significantly over the past decade. Rebranding as McGuinness Mechanical Engineering Ltd in 2022 reflected the wider range of services it now provides, from plumbing and heating installations to ventilation, HVAC, renewable technologies, testing and commissioning and complete mechanical design-and-build solutions.

Today, the company employs 75 people and continues to expand its portfolio, working alongside many of Ireland’s leading developers and main contractors on projects ranging from large-scale housing developments to apartment schemes, student accommodation and specialist commercial works.

Construction Director Barry Hughes has witnessed that growth first-hand. Having spent six years with the company, he has served as Construction Director for the past two years and plays a key role in overseeing the successful delivery of projects throughout Ireland.

“We’ve had strong growth over the last few years and have taken a lot of new people into the company as the company as we’ve grown,” Barry told Building Ireland.

The company’s success has been driven not only by an increasing workload but also by its willingness to diversify into new sectors.

While residential developments remain the backbone of the business, McGuinness Mechanical Engineering has successfully broadened its experience through projects such as the award-winning Parnell Street Student Accommodation development in Dublin.

“We have different types of projects coming on, we have completed a number of Commercial projects such as Schools, Pharmaceutical warehouses, Office Fit outs, we primarily doing Large scale residential and Parnell Street was our first foray into doing a student accommodation, albeit some of the staff maybe might have had previous experience in that nature of project,” Barry said.

“Getting the like of Parnell street delivered helps us trying to push on with future works of a similar nature.”

That willingness to embrace new challenges is paying dividends. The company currently has a dozen live projects spread across Ireland, reflecting both the scale of its operations and the confidence clients continue to place in the Newry-based contractor.

To manage this workload effectively, the business is structured around dedicated low-density and high-Density/Commercial divisions, each led by its own Operations Manager.

“We have 12 projects on-going at the minute. The company is split between low-density and high-Density/Commercial and we have an Ops Manager for each, low-Density projects are typically medium to large new housing,” Barry outlined.

“In terms of those, we have nine of the low-density sites active at moment ranging from 60 houses to 257 houses consisting of full mechanical work on each of the houses and duplexes.

“On the high-density side, we have completed a number of large apartment Developments to date and we are currently working on a 427 apartment scheme over two blocks in Sandyford for Comer Group, We’re doing another apartment development down in Cherrywood for Mannings Construction and we have a scheme coming up which is 69 Apartments for Castlethorn in Bray. Then we have another pharma fit-out due to start there in September having completed 3 of these previously for Mc Garrell Reilly.

“So it’s a mixture of projects, but, if you like, 60-65% of the business is made up of that residential style work.”

The company’s ability to deliver projects of varying scale while maintaining consistently high standards has become one of its defining strengths. Every project benefits from a collaborative approach that combines experienced management with skilled site teams and modern construction technology.

Barry believes the people within the organisation remain its greatest asset.

“We have a dynamic team here with different backgrounds. Having good people makes up a large part of it” he said.

“We have a really good team and we’ve obviously grown it over the last while, we have a really good office team backing up a well experienced site team. It’s a strong team with a really good culture, people work well together and everybody is keen to drive progress on and try to deliver as good a product as we can for our clients.

“There’s a strong focus in the company on quality and we’re always trying to improve the quality of our work.”

That commitment to continuous improvement extends beyond workmanship. McGuinness Mechanical Engineering has embraced digital technology to streamline operations, improve communication and provide greater transparency for clients throughout every stage of a project.

One of the company’s most significant investments has been its implementation of the cloud-based construction management platform Procore, which has transformed the way projects are managed and documented.

“We’re also heavily invested in digital construction as well. We’ve been using a cloud-based construction software called Procore. We’re in our fourth year of using Procore and, in terms of what it has done for the company around digitising a lot of the processes, speeding up our commissioning process, it has really been a gamechanger in the company in terms of tracking our quality, recording it and carrying out the commissioning process,” Barry said.

“Before that, it would’ve been paper copies being completed and then you’re reliant on them getting returned and scanned, but now guys are all completing certs on their iPads and they’re immediately available. This has really sped up the commissioning process for our clients.”

The investment has enabled the company to improve efficiency while ensuring accurate quality records and commissioning documentation are instantly accessible. For clients operating under increasingly demanding programmes, that level of responsiveness has become an important competitive advantage.

Barry believes those standards have helped foster long-term relationships with contractors and developers across Ireland.

“In terms of why they keep using us, we’re a good company and we look after the contractors we work with,” he said.

“They know we’re reliable and will deliver for them.”

The company has also invested recently in other digital capabilities with a BIM team being developed within the business and  the company having recently undertaken the rollout of a new ERP system to improve commercial business reporting. These investments will enable Mc Guinness to continue growing and meeting the business needs of their key clients.

That reputation for reliability received significant industry recognition in May when McGuinness Mechanical Engineering secured one of the sector’s most prestigious accolades at the 2026 Irish Construction Excellence Awards.

The company claimed the Specialist Services Contract (€1 million to €10 million) award for its mechanical services package on the Parnell Street Student Accommodation development, a project that showcased both its technical expertise and its ability to work collaboratively under demanding conditions.

“It was our second or third go at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards and it was one that we were really keen to win,” Barry reflected.

“Getting the award was recognition for the work that went into going through the interview process and pulling the information together but more importantly, it’s recognition to the team who delivered the project.”

The Parnell Street development presented numerous challenges throughout construction.

Delivered within a constrained city-centre environment, the project involved a phased handover programme alongside the careful integration of a heritage building into the overall development.

“Parnell Street was a project that was tricky, a tight programme on it and a phased handover as well,” Barry explained.

“There was a heritage element at the front of the building around Block A was, which was originally an old bakery on Parnell Street.

“So one block was handed over after the other and it was a very tricky project with a lot of hard working going in and working collaboratively between ourselves and the main contractor.”

Winning the Irish Construction Excellence Award was therefore particularly satisfying, recognising not only technical excellence but also the teamwork, planning and collaborative approach that underpinned the project’s successful delivery.

Looking ahead, McGuinness Mechanical Engineering intends to build on that momentum by expanding its client base while continuing to strengthen relationships with existing partners.

“The hopes are to continue picking up new business like that,” Barry said.

“We’re hoping to continue those partnerships. We are working with some of Ireland’s biggest Contractors & Developers such as Evara, Cairn, Castlethorn, Mc Garrell Reilly, Sisk, to name a few, so these are relationships that we’ll be looking to develop.”

Alongside securing new contracts, the company remains firmly committed to investing in its workforce. Developing internal talent has become a key priority as the business prepares for its next phase of growth.

“On the people side of the business, we’re looking to grow the business and invest in the people within it,” the Construction Director added.

“So there’s a lot of work going on in terms of upskilling people and we’ve set-up a senior management team under the directors. We have a lot of talented people within the business.”

With a growing portfolio of high-profile projects, a skilled workforce, an expanding management structure and national recognition through its Irish Construction Excellence Award success, McGuinness Mechanical Engineering Ltd is exceptionally well positioned for the future.

Built on strong relationships, technical expertise and a culture of continuous improvement, the Newry-based contractor continues to strengthen its reputation as a trusted mechanical services partner capable of delivering complex projects to the highest standards across Ireland.
