Boyle Construction celebrates 40 years of excellence

28 Jan , 2025

Celebrating 40 years in business, Boyle Construction is a leading building firm in the North-West which took home a major accolade at the 2024 Irish Construction Industry (ICI) Awards.

Winner of the prestigious Contractor of the Year – SME category, the Letterkenny-based main contractor has seen remarkable growth since 1984 when it was founded by Donal and Eugene Boyle. From humble beginnings, it has evolved into a thriving company with over 90 employees and an average turnover of €30 million which is set to increase substantially in 2025.

Now under the management of brothers Martin and Michael Boyle – Donal’s sons – Boyle Construction is embedded in the local community and is proud to be able to provide employment for local graduates from ATU Donegal, ATU Sligo and Ulster University, thereby retaining talent in the North-West.

Boyle Construction began as a modest, family-owned business, founded with a vision for quality and integrity in the construction industry. Initially focusing on small residential and commercial projects, it gradually earned a reputation for reliability and excellence. The founders’ hands-on approach and dedication to customer satisfaction quickly set Boyle Construction apart in a competitive market.

As the company expanded, it diversified its portfolio to include large commercial, healthcare and industrial projects, leveraging its growing expertise and resources. Investment in skilled personnel and advanced technologies allowed Boyle Construction to tackle increasingly complex and large-scale projects. A commitment to innovation and sustainability further solidified its reputation as a forward-thinking company.

Today, Boyle Construction stands as a leading construction firm in the North-West, known for delivering high-quality, timely and cost-effective solutions. Indeed, it is one of the very few construction companies in the region that can undertake projects ranging from €1 million to €50 million+. With a robust portfolio and strong community ties, the company continues to grow, driven by the same values that initiated its journey.

The successful family business holds several key accreditations that affirm its commitment to quality, safety and industry, including ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), Safe T Cert (Occupational Health & Safety) and VCR (Voluntary Construction Register) membership.

Launched in 2014, the Irish Construction Industry (ICI) Awards recognise, encourage and celebrate original and innovative contractors, businesses, teams, consultants and projects that demonstrate excellence in the built environment. Boyle Construction is no stranger to awards ceremonies, having won Healthcare Project of the Year at the Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Awards last May for its successful delivery of the South Donegal Community Nursing Unit project in Ballyshannon. The same project was also shortlisted in the Contractor Health / Education Project of the Year category at last year’s ICI Awards.

“It’s always an honour and a privilege to be recognised alongside the very best in the industry,” Boyle Construction Contracts Manager Martin Callaghan said.

“This is our fourth award nomination in the past 12 months, with the other three being for individual projects. Every nomination means a lot to us, especially as the North-West is too often underrepresented. We’re extremely proud to fly the flag for Donegal and the North-West region. Our people all hail from the local area, and we also have a huge responsibility and allegiance to our local supply line. Having worked at home and abroad, the skill sets in Donegal are on a par with anywhere in the world in my opinion.

“We have a tight-knit, top class team and an equally tight-knit list of contractors and subcontractors. We’re in a unique position in that we’re one of only a handful of construction firms in Donegal that can operate on projects worth €50 million and above.”

Shaun Sweeney, Senior Technical Manager said: “The company is a homegrown family business and, of course, relationships are key. We have forged fantastic relationships with the HSE, Department of Education and many firms in the private sector.

“We can draw on a lot of inhouse expertise and pride ourselves on our technical experience.”

The Health Care Project of the Year 2024 award-winning South Donegal Community Nursing Unit consisted of the redevelopment of an existing and dilapidated HSE daycare hospital asset into a massively expanded and modern state-of-the-art 80-bed facility as part of the National CNU Capital Works program. In completing this project and getting this recognition has given the company great pride and confidence in its abilities.”

Boyle Construction has since commenced works on an even larger Community Nursing Unit in Letterkenny valued at over €50 million. The works include the construction of a 110-bed part three-storey, part two-storey community hospital with a four-storey central lift and stair core on a sloping site. The project includes site works, underground drainage, new car parking spaces, hard and soft landscaping, access roads and footpaths.

Other current / recent projects include PGIM (Letterkenny) extension and fitout, valued at €5 million; Block L, ATU Sligo extension and refurbishment valued at €8.3 million; Little Angels School in Letterkenny, valued at €13 million; €20 million extension to the existing Zeus manufacturing complex in Letterkenny; and office fitout to Fintru in Letterkenny costing just over €1 million.

“We’ve just finished summer demolition and refurbishment works at ATU Donegal valued at €2 million. It was a quick turnaround which is something we’re renowned for and wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t have our skilled workforce,” Martin says.

“We’ve also completed a €8 million car park on the Sligo University Hospital Campus and have won the tender for a new 90-bed Community Nursing Unit in Carrick-on-Shannon valued at €40 million. Rhatigan Architects are the architects on this project, who we previously collaborated with on the South Donegal Community Nursing Unit. MCA Architects designed the Letterkenny Community Nursing Unit and we also enjoy an excellent working relationship with them.”

Boyle Construction has consistently aimed for operational excellence through strategic initiatives and continuous improvement. Key steps taken to enhance operational performance include Technology Integration, Process Optimisation, Skilled Workforce, Effective Procurement and Quality Assurance.

“We’ve invested heavily in BIM and Procore software over the last number of years, to stay ahead of the game.

“Our goal is to achieve operational excellence, delivering high-quality projects efficiently and effectively every time,” Martin concludes.
