3 Mar , 2022

Gay Doyle Construction Ltd is an established, experienced and highly regarded building company that offers expertise from concept to completion of one-off house builds. Building Ireland caught up with Managing Director Gay who detailed how the company has grown and expanded since its inception.

Whatever the size and scope of your new house build, Gay Doyle Construction Ltd has the skills and ability to complete it on budget and on time. All of this will be delivered with no compromise on quality.

Evidence of the Ballyhenebry based company’s exemplary workmanship is dotted throughout the Kilkenny landscape and beyond. Specialising in one-off house builds, their dedicated and skilled team are renowned for high quality end products.

Back in 1999, Gay took the decision to set up his own construction company. A carpenter by trade, he started off with three men on the payroll, including his father, Eamon. Fast forward 22 years and he has built up a business that provides regular work to approximately 25 people, including sub-contractors, and boasts an impressive portfolio of successfully completed projects.

“Two of the lads – Barry Drohan and Patrick Connolly – are still with me today,” Gay informed Building Ireland. “I trained the two of them up as apprentice carpenters and they do everything with me now. My father, Eamon, was farming at that time but he retired and came with us for the first four to five years. That’s how I started out and, thankfully, things have gone well for us ever since.”

Over time, Gay has developed mutually beneficial relationships with dependable sub-contractors.

“I’ve the same blocklayers, plasterers, plumbers, electricians with me for years. They are lads I can trust and that’s important when it comes to ensuring the projects meet the high standards that we set for ourselves.”

Gay also has the unwavering support of his wife, Noelle, and four children, Kelly-Ann, Aoife, Aine and John, and they all share a great interest in the family business. “The three girls help out during the summer and some weekends while John, who is 13 and the youngest, wants to come off working with me any chance he can get.”

Renowned as a professional and reliable building company with years of experience, Gay Doyle Construction has more than its fair share of satisfied customers under the tool belt. People who employ their services are guaranteed peace of mind that the job will be thoroughly done by professionals.

“It’s all one-off houses we do and we would complete approximately six to nine projects per year,” the affable Doyle explained. “We have eight projects on the go at the moment and business is going very good, and it’s also looking good for the immediate future.

“The last year was tough with the lockdowns and the rise in the price of materials isn’t helping either. When I get a job I bulk buy up front which means I can hold my price the same. I don’t have to go back looking for extras and extras and extras.

“We would usually cover Waterford, Tipperary and Kilkenny while we have one project on the go in Carlow at the moment, in Graiguenamanagh.”

A commitment to providing his customers with the highest standard of service and quality of work is reflected in the increase in repeat business that is currently coming Gay’s way.

“We are starting to get repeat work from children of people I would have built houses for years ago which is a very good sign from our point of view. We pride ourselves in delivering a good finish and establishing good relationships with the clients. Clients have to trust you and, likewise, you have to be able to trust the clients.”

Are there any plans in the pipeline for future expansion?

“I’m happy to stay small and keep control,” Gay – who personally manages every project – answered. “That way I am in a better position to turn out a good product then. I work myself every day, I’m on the tools every day, and I can see what’s going on.

“We leave a very high standard of work on all of our jobs. We’d had very few snags on a job after we handed it over to an architect to come back to us. I look after all the finishing myself.”
