Business thriving G & M Construction Ltd

10 Aug , 2021

G & M Construction Ltd in Co Sligo has been providing quality work for its clients in the domestic and commercial industries since its inception in 2007. Building Ireland caught up with co-director Jerome McNamara to learn all about the company – from its origins to the state of business today.

Business is “pretty good” right now at G & M Construction Ltd and the plan for company directors Alan Gannon and Jerome McNamara is to try and keep things that way right through 2021.

Operating from 33 Cedar Dr, Knappagh Beg, Co Sligo, the company employs nine full-time and has developed an excellent reputation for its work all throughout the Yeats County and beyond its borders over the past 13 years.

Indeed, G & M Construction Ltd has built up a strong customer base in that time and it’s one that continues to grow out west.

Building Ireland touched base with Jerome McNamara to find out more about what is clearly a thriving business these days.

“We have carried out a lot of domestic work down through the years and that’s since progressed more and more into the commercial end,” said Jerome.

“We have done five or six Centras/SuperValus to date between renovation, extension and full fit-out.

“We’ve also worked on three different schools around the area and the FAS Training Centre in Sligo.”

Right now, G & M Construction Ltd is currently immersed its third school project to date and also has on-going work at the FAS Training Centre just outside the town of Sligo.

It seems the projects keep on coming, with more lined up for the start of 2021 when the company will be marking a 14th year in business.

It’s all a far cry from where Alan and Jerome started out all those years ago, having originally set-up their business as an electrician venture.

“I served my time as an electrician and after a couple of years I went back to college and done a degree in engineering,” Jerome outlined.

“In 2007, Alan and I started this business as an electrician company after the company we had been working for closed.

“We took those lads on from that company and completed a number of projects and started working closer with a couple of architects.

“In 2012, we let the electrician company go and focused on the construction end of things and, thankfully, it has worked out for me and Alan since.”

For Alan, Jerome and the whole team at G & M Construction Ltd, these are busy times and the hope is that things will stay that way in these uncertain times.

“Business is pretty good right now,” Jerome stated.

“There’ve been ups and downs this year with the Covid-19 pandemic and we were a bit slow to get off the ground after lockdown was lifted, but right now we are busy and things are looking good.”

Government lockdown this past Spring affected business all over the country and G & M Construction Ltd were no different.

Today, the company is more than making up the ground it lost between the months of March and May as the projects continue to roll in.

“We’ve a school job going on at the moment and a job in FAS,” he said.

“We’ve an extension job in a SuperValu in Strokestown which is almost finished and we just started an extension/renovation on the Centra in Carrick-on-Shannon.”

So, as they near closer and closer to a decade-and-a-half in business, the burning question is what has been the secret to success thus far for G & M Construction Ltd?

How has a company which started as an electrician business at the beginning of a harsh economic recession managed to grow into a successful construction firm over the past eight years?

For Jerome, a lot of it comes down to the quality of their work and the continued good relationships they have with clientele.

“I think we’re really easy to get on with here and that our clients know that we’re always approachable,” he said.

“We get in and get out and leave a good finish on all of our work afterwards.

“As I said, we would always be approachable and always keep our customers in mind, along with health and safety.”

Customer satisfaction has undoubtedly been key to G & M Construction Ltd’s success along the way.

As for the company’s growth, Alan and Jerome have been very much satisfied with it to date and don’t intend on growing their numbers further any time soon.

As Jerome himself explained, they are happy with where they’re currently at over in Knappagh Beg.

“With the size that we’re at now, we know what we’re capable of and that we can ensure the quality of work every time,” he concluded.
