Castletownbere Construction continues to build on a proud family tradition

21 Oct, 2026

For almost four decades, Castletownbere Construction Ltd has been synonymous with quality construction across West Cork and beyond.

Established in 1988, the family-run contractor has earned an enviable reputation for delivering residential, commercial and public sector projects to the highest standards, with much of its workload generated through repeat business and long-standing client relationships.

Based in the heart of the Beara Peninsula, the company has its roots in a family building tradition stretching back to the 1950s.

Today, under the leadership of Managing Director Jeremiah (Miah) O’Sullivan, Castletownbere Construction continues to thrive by combining traditional workmanship with a practical, customer-focused approach that has served generations of clients.

Business remains exceptionally strong for the experienced contractor, with a healthy mix of private, commercial and public sector work ensuring that the company is busier than ever.

“We’re flat out at the moment and, for now, we’re not taking on any more work,” Miah told Building Ireland. “So it’s looking all positive really.”

While the company has expanded and diversified over the years, it remains a close-knit family business with a dedicated core team.

“We’ve four full-time staff and Caroline, working in the office as well. She’s our powerhouse and keeps us on the straight and narrow the whole time,” Miah said.

That experienced team, together with trusted subcontractors and long-established suppliers, allows the company to maintain the high standards that have become its hallmark throughout West Cork and Kerry.

“We have an excellent team and we seem to get through work quite quickly,” Miah outlined. “A lot of our work is repeat business as well, so we’re very happy with that.”

That repeat business has been fundamental to the company’s continued success.

“We would give priority to repeat business, obviously. A lot of our stuff would be for the likes of the Castletownbere Fishermen’s Co-Op and Celtic Sea Minerals, and when they’re looking for something to get done, we don’t hang about. We get it done fairly quickly.”

The company’s versatility continues to be one of its greatest strengths.

At present, Castletownbere Construction is delivering a wide variety of projects across the region, from private home renovations to commercial developments and public housing schemes.

“We’ve a lot of renovations going on at the moment,” Miah said. “We’ve done three projects for American couples that have bought properties in the area.”

The growing number of overseas buyers investing in homes throughout West Cork has provided an additional stream of work for the company, whose reputation for quality craftsmanship and reliability makes it a natural choice for clients undertaking major refurbishment projects.

Alongside these renovation works, the company continues to construct one-off homes throughout the region.

“As well as that, we’re doing the usual one-off housing and things like that,” Miah explained.

“We started a fairly big project recently for Celtic Sea Minerals, who are building a new production line. They’ll hope to employ 10 or 20 people when it’s up and running, so it’s good for the area as well.”

The investment represents another welcome boost for employment in West Cork and highlights the important role local contractors continue to play in supporting regional economic development.

The company is equally active in the public sector, where it has built lasting relationships with a number of government agencies and local authorities over many years.

Among its current projects is the refurbishment of a former Garda station, which is being transformed into much-needed social housing.

“We’re doing an old Garda Station which we are turning into two apartments for social housing,” Miah said.

“It would’ve started around the end of March for us and most of the heavy lifting is done with it now.”

The project is another example of the company’s ability to breathe new life into existing buildings while helping address local housing needs.

Castletownbere Construction also continues to carry out significant maintenance and refurbishment work for public bodies across the region.

“We do a lot of work for the OPW and the (Cork) County Council in the housing section,” Miah said. “We do a lot of their repair work and when one of their tenants moves out there’s nearly always work to be done on each unit. We go in and do that for them.”

The consistency of that workload is built on years of dependable service.

“That’s all repeat business that we’ve been doing for a good number of years,” said the Corkonian.

The company has also maintained a long-standing relationship with the RNLI, carrying out maintenance work on lifeboat stations after previously delivering several major RNLI construction projects.

Over the years, Castletownbere Construction has completed new RNLI lifeboat stations in Castletownbere, Baltimore and Union Hall, while also delivering projects for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, commercial clients, community organisations and private homeowners.

Despite continued demand, Miah acknowledges that the construction industry is not without its challenges.

“The only negative thing really is that it’s difficult to get subbies at the moment,” he said. “They’re all so busy, especially electrical and plumbing. They’re very scarce on the ground, so it can be difficult to keep a timetable on track when you’re waiting on them, but that’s the way it is.”

Like many contractors throughout Ireland, Castletownbere Construction has also experienced the impact of rising material and labour costs in recent years.

Although the company’s order book remains full, Miah admits he has concerns about the affordability of smaller domestic projects for ordinary homeowners.

“Our order book is full,” he stated. “I suppose government work is easy enough to continue with. What’s difficult for us really is doing the smaller jobs for ordinary people with the way prices have gone so high.

“It’s so hard to justify stuff nowadays. That’s the difficult part now we find at the moment and I really feel sorry for them with the way prices are so high, but what can you do? There’s nothing you can do, unfortunately.”

Even so, the outlook for the company remains extremely positive.

Thanks to a loyal client base, an experienced workforce and a reputation built over decades of delivering quality workmanship, Castletownbere Construction continues to go from strength to strength.

From bespoke one-off homes and sensitive renovation projects to commercial developments, social housing and public sector maintenance contracts, the company has successfully established itself as one of West Cork’s most respected building contractors.

Nearly 40 years after its incorporation, and with family values still at the heart of the business, Castletownbere Construction remains committed to the principles that have underpinned its success from the very beginning: reliability, quality, integrity and service.

As demand across the region continues to grow, Miah O’Sullivan and his dedicated team look forward to building on that proud legacy for many years to come.
