Cork-based engineering and project consultants Matt O’Mahony & Associates Ltd (MOMA) celebrates 25 years in business in 2017. The building services engineering specialist boasts an impressive portfolio which includes numerous prestigious projects in the residential, educational, commercial, pharmaceutical and industrial sectors.

Emerging from a partnership originally formed in 1981, the practice was established in 1992 by Matt O’Mahony. The firm has grown to employ 13 staff. Matt, who is the current chairman, was joined by his sons Denis in 1997, Frank in 2007 and more recently by Michael. Matt, Denis and Frank are directors of the company along with John Geaney – who has been with the company since its formation.

Over the past quarter of a century, Matt O’Mahony & Associates have established themselves as leading consulting engineers. The firm specialises in the following: building services engineering; forensic / litigation engineering; Building Energy Ratings (BER) – domestic, commercial and public; energy audits; pre-purchase property inspections for domestic properties; certified European passive house design; conciliation; arbitration.

The company’s extensive and diverse portfolio of projects illustrates its experience in the provision of full building services and engineering design services. These services are provided for new construction, extension or refurbishment projects on a wide variety of building types.

The family-run practice has successfully completed projects ranging from banks, schools and hotels to residential accommodation, nursing homes and sports facilities. It also specialises in church renovation. Clients include Government bodies, banks, Education and Training Boards, Solas, Local Authorities, HSE and insurance companies.

The full list of services provided are: electrical engineering services; mechanical engineering services; sustainable engineering services; energy analysis consultancy; building energy ratings assessments; cost monitoring, analysis and reporting;  fire safety certificate applications; disability access certificate applications; submissions of planning applications; planning consultancy; expert witness services; dilapidation surveys and reports; property inspections; commercial / industrial accident investigation; certified passive house design.

“We pride ourselves on our high quality, personalised service. We work with our clients from beginning to end on every project. Our goal at all times is to ensure that the client’s requirements are met,” managing director Denis O’Mahony explains.

“We have clients in both the private and public sectors. We attract a lot of repeat business in both sectors which are certainly more buoyant now than they were a few years ago. A lot of projects that had been on hold are now starting to move.”

MOMA is engaged in a number of new builds and extensions at present, including primary and secondary schools in Dublin, Wexford and Cork, as well as the Cork City North West Primary Care Centre at the St. Mary’s Health Campus in Cork. This was designated the number one priority Primary Care Centre in the Government’s national prioritisation of these in 2012. MOMA have also acted as the Building Services engineer on a number of Bank of Ireland premises across the south of the country, Cork’s magnificent North Cathedral, Temple Carrig school in Greystones, Co. Wicklow and the Glen Regeneration Project – An urban regeneration scheme heated by a new biomass-fired district heating system – involving the construction of 114 new residential units, refurbishment of 48 existing residential units and construction of a new Community Centre, in Cork city.

MOMA’s ability to successfully tender for public sector work has much to do with the fact that it has been ISO 9001:2008 accredited since 1997. Quality management procedures – compliant with ISO 9001:2008 – are applied to all design work, tender assessment work and site inspection work undertaken.

The practice utilises a comprehensive range of drafting and simulation software in its mechanical and electrical design work in order to produce high quality design output. The software requirements of the practice are continuously evaluated to ensure that the most up-to-date packages are in use. This ensures that the firm can easily integrate into any design or client team on projects – regardless of the design software in use.

Ensuring that current standards and industry best practice are implemented in all design work produced by MOMA is crucial to the success of the firm. This is formalised in MOMA’s  CPD (Continuing Professional Development) Policy. The firm is accredited under the Engineers Ireland CPD Programme. MOMA’s CPD Programme is in place to stimulate lifelong learning among its employees in line with best international practice.

As well as building services engineering, MOMA provides expert professional witness services whereby it is engaged by solicitors, private individuals or, by large corporations, to carry out engineering evaluations on matters which may be the subject of litigation. This work is carried out for a variety of regular clients, including most of the major insurance companies. The firm’s team of experienced mechanical, electrical and civil / structural engineers, who are all qualified to Post-Graduate degree levels in their fields, regularly provide expert witness services for clients.

The work involves the performing of an inspection / survey at the locus of an accident or on a piece of equipment, analysis of all relevant information on the subject of the litigation and the preparation of a report. The report generally includes conclusions on the likely apportionment of responsibility from an engineering perspective. If necessary, MOMA experts will attend in court for the purposes of providing sworn evidence before a judge. The company has experience in giving evidence at all levels of the Court Service and in attending at conciliation and arbitration hearings. As the firm approaches the significant milestone of 25 years in operation, MOMA are looking forward to continued growth and development into the future.
