Ireland’s largest flat roofing contracting firm, Shamrock Asphalt Ltd, is celebrating 40 years in business. We recently caught up with Managing Director Paddy Redmond to find out what the Dublin-based family business is all about.
Specialising in commercial and residential flat roofing, Shamrock Asphalt Ltd is one of the longest-established contractors of its kind in the country. Paddy founded the company in 1978 along with his brother John, who is now retired. The affable Artane man has been in the business for 50 years and brings this experience to bear on every job he undertakes.
“I’ve been doing this since I was 15 and I’m 65 now,” he informs us.
“I qualified as an asphalt roofer before starting out on my own at 25 doing small work for big builders. The same builders then started to offer us big work and that’s when Shamrock Asphalt started to grow and get its name established. We’ve stood the test of time thanks to our fantastic knowledge of roofing and our exceptional reputation.
“Our name is highly-respected in the construction industry. It’s very gratifying when a builder tells us that we were recommended by someone else. We’re known for being the best in the business. That’s why the leading building contractors choose us time and time again,”
Shamrock Asphalt Ltd’s knowledge and expertise in all areas of flat roofing is second to none. This includes systems of Mastic Asphalt, Torch-On Systems and Single Ply PVC Systems. The company’s client list includes the OPW, HSE, Trinity College Dublin, UCD, NUIG, IDA and Cadbury Ireland to name but a few. It also works closely with a number of main contractors, including John Sisk & Son, JJ Rhattigan, Duggan Brothers, BAM Contracting, John Paul Construction and Park Developments.
The contractor’s in-house technical expertise enables it to provide a comprehensive service from the design stage right through to job completion, while its comprehensive insurance package covers the design, installation and workmanship of the system, and also provides for consequential damage.
Shamrock Asphalt Ltd is an approved contractor for the following products: Moy Materials Bitumen Roofing Systems, Moy Materials Extensive and Intensive Green Roof Systems, IKO Torch-On Built Up Systems; IKO Permaphalt Polymer Modified Asphalt; IKO Armourplan Single Ply PVC; Kingspan Top Deck and Composite Panel Systems; IKO Green Roofs; Roof Tech Liquid Waterproofing.
The Dublin-based company has evolved with the changing needs and demands of the industry to offer unrivalled services and products. These services include estimation and quantity surveying; roof inspections and reports; roof testing; installation of built-up roof systems for asphalt, torch-on membranes, single ply membranes, metals etc; site and project management; Quality Assurance management; technical advice and support on different systems; in-house CAD detailing; site specific health and safety statements; comprehensive insurance package.As well as providing professional sub-contract services to the big building contractors, Shamrock Asphalt Ltd has extensive experience in Project Management PSCS (Project Supervision Construction Stage). The PSCS supervisor is appointed before any construction work begins.
The flat roof specialist has provided PSCS services to clients such as the IDA, Trinity College Dublin, UCD, Beaumont Hospital and Cadbury Ireland.On-site work is continually monitored from the beginning to the end of each project, with regular feedback and reporting provided as part of the service. Each project is assigned a dedicated contracts manager to manage all aspects of the project from office to site.
Shamrock Asphalt Ltd has installed over one million square metres of roofing membranes throughout the country. Projects it has completed in recent years include the Lidl Head Office; Central Park Development; Exchange Building Dublin 1; Belgrove Residence in UCD along with their Medical Science Block and James Joyce Building, all in the UCD Campus; Custom House Dublin Roof Recover; Colaiste Ailigh, Letterkenny; EU Presidency Building in Dublin Castle; new Acute Psychiatric Unit in Beaumont Hospital; IT Sligo Science Building; Life Course Studies Building in NUIG and the new GPO Museum.
More recently, the contractor has worked on Capital Dock for John Sisk & Son, the Primary Care Centres in Dungarvan, Waterford, Carrick-on-Suir, Tuam, Boyle, Claremorris, Ballinrobe, Ballymote and Westport for JJ Rhattigan. It has also completed projects for JJ Rhattigan at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore and Kevin Street Garda Station in Dublin. Shamrock Asphalt Ltd has completed works on another Garda Station project in Wexford for Duggan Brothers and is currently working on Elm Park, Dublin 4 for John Paul Construction.
The company is a real family affair with Paddy being joined in the business by his son Conor (Contracts Manager), daughter Claire (Accounts Manager) and son-in-law Donovan Rossi (General Manager). Other key personnel are Senior Quantity Surveyor Keith Quinn and Site Manager Martin Redmond, who has 30 years’ experience in roofing. Shamrock Asphalt Ltd employs 22 highly-skilled staff directly and several more on a sub-contract basis.

We have delivered multi-million euro projects on time and within budget for some of the biggest and best builders and architects in the country.
