Harp Electrical Engineering in tune with its clients’ needs

18 Jan , 2018

Celebrating 15 years in business, Harp Electrical Engineering Ltd is a leading electrical contracting company catering for both large and small clients throughout Ireland and the UK. As well as being the electrical contractor of choice for many, the Co. Meath-based firm specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of control panels.

Founded in 2002 by Shane Finnegan, Harp Electrical Engineering has grown to employ 40 staff, about half of who are highly-qualified and experienced electricians. Its head office is located in Kentstown near Navan, while it has a second office in Meadowlark House, London. The Safe Electric-registered contractor first entered the UK market about a decade ago and this led to establishment of a sister company, Harp Electrical Engineering (UK) Ltd, in 2008.

Priding itself on the high quality of its management systems and ability to meet the technical demands of its clients, the company also provides a preventive maintenance programme and service contracts covering all aspects of electrical maintenance, including PAT testing, fire alarm and emergency lighting tests. In addition, Harp Electrical Engineering carries out thermal imaging and power quality analysis on all electrical systems.

The control panel end of the business has been so successful that it has outgrown the electrical contracting, particularly in the UK where most of its work is concentrated.

Control panels and automation has become the company’s niche. Harp Electrical Engineering can design, build and install a controls system package to suit its clients’ needs. It secures a significant amount of general contracting and maintenance contracts through the control panel work it does.

A long-standing relationship with another Meath-based company, Turmec Engineering, has facilitated the company’s growth in the UK and enhanced its reputation as a leading control panel specialist. Operating out of Athboy since 1972, Turmec is a leading expert in the design and manufacture of recycling equipment, and was the main plant provider and engineering consultant on major recycling facility projects for the likes of Powerday in London and New Earth Solutions in Bristol in recent years.

Harp Electrical Engineering has worked in conjunction with Turmec on many of these contracts. The UK market accounts for 70-80% of the company’s overall business, having been as high as 90% during the recession.

Harp Electrical Engineering was the main electrical contractor on Powerday’s new material recovery facility in Enfield, London two years ago and was responsible for the electrical refurbishment works at their Old Oak Lane site in the city. It continues to carry out maintenance works for Powerday on a regular basis.

As controls panels are designed exactly to customer needs, no two panels are the same, meaning clients are guaranteed the highest quality control systems that precisely meet their requirements. Harp Electrical Engineering’s knowledge and skills base in this area has enabled it to consistently grow. Using the latest computer design software, the company guarantees that its designs comply with the relevant Irish and European standards. Before signing off any work as completed, every panel is rigorously tested to ensure it operates as designed.

Services provided include control panel design and build; control panel install and commission; control panel refurbishment and repair; PLC programming; HMI programming; design and installation of SCADA systems. Whether it’s a modification to an existing panel or a completely new system you require, Harp Electrical Engineering can provide you with the solution.

Electrical contracting, maintenance and breakdown, MV Connections, testing and inspection, monitoring and mechanical services are Harp Electrical Engineering’s other specialist areas. As a reputable electrical contractor, the company offers professional advice on design and layout of electrical systems, lighting design and mains distribution equipment. Its expertise in project management, design and installation sees clients benefit from consistently high standards of work at every stage of their project.

The wealth of experience the firm has gained across multiple industries and sectors means it has the technical expertise and know-how to undertake projects of all sizes. These can vary from wiring a single new machine to installing a complete process line or fitting out a new factory. Harp Electrical Engineering has specialist knowledge in the fields of factory and industrial installations, commercial building installations, mine and quarry plant, and recycling and waste management plants. Distance is no object, with the company having the personnel and equipment to undertake projects of significant size anywhere in Ireland or the UK.

Harp Electrical Engineering offers a complete maintenance and breakdown service and also provides routine preventative maintenance to ensure its clients’ plant and machinery are working at their utmost efficiency. The company has also been helping its clients move away from diesel-powered generators to Medium Voltage (MV) Connections, which eliminates the fuel bill, reduces the man hours to monitor and maintain the generator, and helps them become more productive and efficient. Harp Electrical Engineering has installed MV Connections for Oxigen Environmental, Panda Waste Recycling and Thornton’s Recycling here in Ireland as well as for New Earth Solutions and Powerday in the UK.

Electrical hazards can be fatal and that is why electrical safety is paramount to Harp Electrical Engineering who are experts in testing and inspection. As fully approved Safe Electric and ECTI contractors, adherence to stringent technical standards, safety standards and industry codes of practice are assured.

When it comes to monitoring and managing energy, the contractor offers a smart metering and data logging hardware system for both primary and secondary metering markets. Working closely with the client, Harp Electrical Engineering is able to provide you with a range of services from site survey, installation and data collection through to metering hardware.

Harp Electrical Engineering also provides mechanical services which include facility management, building statutory compliance, building management systems, and mechanical and electrical design.
