Jonathan Sweeney Carpentry & Construction – a name synonymous with quality

19 Nov , 2021

Based in Belmullet, Co Mayo, Jonathan Sweeney Carpentry & Construction has been delivering quality carpentry and construction services for over 15 years. Jonathan Sweeney revealed that his company undertakes all works involved with new builds, renovations, insurance claims, council grants, pyrite remediation plus lots more.

Jonathan Sweeney Carpentry & Construction offer a full range of building services throughout north Mayo and beyond. They are highly regarded as a professional and reliable building company with years of experience and have accumulated a lot of happy customers under their tool belt.

Jonathan Sweeney took the brave decision to go out on his own back in 2006 and it is fair to say that he hasn’t looked back since.

“After finishing my training as a carpenter, I spotted an opportunity in the area so I just said I’d give it a go,” he explained when asked to trace the roots of his company. “I started off with just myself and two lads and it stayed like that for while but then it just gradually got bigger and bigger.

“I started developing more work through taking on full buildings and renovations.

“I currently have three full-time and two part-time employees working with me, while I also have a reliable bunch of sub-contractors, electricians, plumbers, plasterers and so on, who I work along with when required.”

What services does Jonathan Sweeney Carpentry & Construction specialise in?

“We specialise in all aspects of roofing and carpentry, Jonathan answered, “as well as new builds from start to finish, from foundations right as far as builders finish. Some of the projects we have worked on were complete turnkey.

“We are also heavily involved in council grants and insurance claims work. As well as that, we’re just coming on to another scheme, the pyrite remediation scheme which is kicking off now in the Mayo area.”

He added: “We do decorative concrete as well.”

Whatever the job, the progressive Jonathan Sweeney Carpentry & Construction always ensure that it is carefully planned and completed to their exceptionally high standards. They have a proven track record when it comes to delivering projects on time and within budget.

“We’re on a renovation job at the minute, it’s a council grant scheme that’s leasing houses off people, renovating them, getting them up to standard for tenants who are due to move in at the end of May, June. I’ve a couple of roofs on as well at the minute.

“We were lucky in that we weren’t impacted too badly by the Covid-19 lockdowns. We had essential jobs on the go. It has backlogged a lot of work that we didn’t get done last year because of the closure but I did take on additional work just to get working. I didn’t want to be off on the Covid payment either.”

While this highly skilled and hard-working team tend not to stray too far from north Mayo, Jonathan & Co have been known to travel further afield when required.

“We would cover all across Erris and the only work I’d be doing outside of Erris is roofing. I have another builder in Castlebar, I used to work for on a regular basis but very seldom in the last couple of years. I have built three or four houses in Achill and another house or two out in Ballina but generally our work is in north Mayo.

“We have a very good, qualified and skilled team. We put ourselves forward for most jobs. There is no job too big or small. We’ve just completed a very impressive job on a church down in Glenamoy, a very high pitched roof job which we finished at Christmas time.”

With a new company website (www.jsweeney.carpentryconstruction.com) just launched, Jonathan is optimistic about what the future holds in store for the company. It has come a long with in the last 15 years and consolidation is now the name of the game, as far as he is concerned.

“I’d be hoping to continue going the way we are going,” he outlined. “We seem to have been lucky in one sense over the years. When the recession came, we still had work.

“The way things are going at the moment it’s hard to know what is going to happen next year. There are a lot of people wary that there is going to be a lack of work, a lack of money and everything but, over the last week, I have had three to four people ringing me looking for prices as it is for pyrite houses going to be knocked down and rebuilt. So that will tell you that scheme is just about to kick off now.

“I have also a few more houses in for pricing. I am very busy at the minute. I suppose it’s like anything else – if you don’t put the time and effort into it, it’s not going to be any good.”
