Headquartered in Midleton, County Cork, Lagan Concrete is one of Ireland’s premier supplier of consistent, high-quality readymix concrete, limestone aggregates, concrete blocks and agricultural lime. We caught up with senior dispatch manager Dave Creedon to find out more about this market-leading operation.

Having previously operated as Healy Bros, Lagan Concrete Ltd. was renamed after becoming part of the Lagan Group in April, 2010.  The Lagan Group are renowned for their association within the building and quarrying industries and their acquisition of Lagan Concrete has enabled them to increases their presence in the Munster region.

After extensive investment, Lagan are proud to operate one of the most advanced concrete block and brick making plants in Europe, providing the efficient production processes needed for market–leading products. With on–site laboratories carrying out continuous testing, they can ensure that everything they manufacture meets a consistently high standard.

Now with four depots, Lagan Concrete are the leading supplier of readymix concrete in the Cork / Waterford region. Using the highest quality materials and processing techniques, they supply the residential, commercial and agricultural sectors with a variety of readymix products, all of which are produced using their quarried limestone.

Standard mixes are available in 10N, 15N, 20N, 25N, 30N, 35N, 40N and 50N strength classes, and all mixes can be supplied with 20mm or 14mm aggregate stone. Lagan Concrete specialise in the provision of custom loads and mixes.

A full range of admixtures is also available for the concrete, ranging from water reducing agents, accelerators, and retarders to plasticizers and air entraining agents. These specialist additives provide a number of beneficial effects to the concrete by increasing strength and durability, reducing or increasing setting time. Fibre-reinforced concrete is also available.

All concrete is delivered by a fleet of modern, immaculately-maintained trucks, many of which are fitted with conveyor belts.

At Lagan Concrete’s fully-accredited IS EN206 (the European quality standard for the specification, performance, production and conformity of concrete and concrete related products.) Milebush facility, they quarry and crush their own limestone to produce a full range of quality aggregates, with a vast choice of aggregate types available for collection or delivery including half inch down, 3 inch down, 1 inch to 5 inch stone, Clause 804, 8mm stone, 14mm stone and 20mm stone. The state-of-the-art onsite technical laboratory ensures that all products are of the highest quality.

Lagan Concrete also manufacture a wide range of concrete blocks (including 4” standard blocks, available in 5N and 10N; 6”, 12” and 14” blocks; and 9” cavity blocks) with onsite laboratory technicians constantly testing to ensure that reliability, strength and quality are consistently maintained at the very highest level. All products are also independently tested and in-house results verified

Approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food & The Marine, Lagan Lime is quarried at Lagan Concrete’s Milebush facility from limestone rock that is naturally well balanced with up to 94% calcium carbonate and up to 3.4% magnesium carbonate This balance ensures optimum plant and animal nutrition.

Senior dispatch manager Dave Creedon has been part of the Lagan Concrete Ltd. (and previous Healy Bros) team for 26 years and counting. “At the peak of the boom, we were operating 42 mixers, covering East Cork, West Waterford and into the east side of Cork city,” he reflects.

“There has been steady growth here since Lagan took over and there has been a very noticeable increase in business over the past six months in particular. Lagan took over the plants in Clashmore, Glanworth, Coachford and have also gone into partnership with Coppeen Concrete, which has obviously increased our presence and market share.”

BAM Ireland is Lagan Concrete’s largest customer and they are currently supplying BAM with materials for two large projects in Cork city, namely the refurbishment and extension of the landmark courthouse building at Anglesea Street and the €50m The Capitol retail and office complex on Patrick Street.

“We’ve enjoyed a strong working relationship with BAM since our Healy Bros days,” says Dave. “We also supply a lot of farm contractors with both concrete for farm buildings and with lime.”

Having come through the economic downturn largely unscathed, Lagan Concrete find themselves in an extremely strong position going forward. Regarding the key to the ongoing success of this outstanding supplier of consistently high-quality readymix concrete, limestone aggregates, concrete blocks and agricultural lime, Dave Creedon states:

“It’s a combination of many things. First of all, we have a top-class product. That’s an absolute necessity. We also offer an excellent service and provide all our products at a competitive price. All of these things are important – there’s no point having one without the other.

“We also have a really good team,” he concludes. “We have a highly-experienced workforce, including in excess of 30 direct employees as well as a large number of subcontractors. We have an exceptional fleet as well and investment in the fleet is ongoing. A number of new units were added in 2016 and we have some 171-reg trucks coming in at the start of the year.”

The company boasts an unrivalled track record for excellence and everything is in place to ensure that Lagan Concrete continues to go from strength to strength.
