Leading the way in high-end construction

20 Jun , 2023

Ard Glen Construction is a well-established building contractor specialising in high-end residential one-off new builds, extensions and renovations. The company’s goal is to create successful partnerships with clients throughout the build process and to not only meet, but exceed their expectations through exceptional performance by each member of its construction team.

Founded in 1999 by Pat Flynn and Neville Eager and based in Donard, Co. Wicklow, Ard Glen Construction has earned an enviable reputation for top-quality construction. Pat comes from a family of builders, while Neville has been involved in the trade since the mid-1980s when he trained as a carpenter. Together, they have a wealth of experience in building one-off houses, home extensions and commercial buildings, including demolition works and the restoration of listed buildings. Ard Glen Construction primarily carries out works in Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare.

The company employs 15 people directly who are supported by the same tried and trusted sub-contractors, including Midland Heating & Plumbing in Athboy, Co. Meath, PDMK Electrical in Kildare and McCall’s Woodworking Furniture in Rathvilly, Co. Carlow. Its main suppliers are Chadwick’s Naas, Kilsaran and Stephenson Transport

“As well as employing our own top-class team, we rely heavily on our sub-contractors who are with us on nearly every job. The importance of having good, skilled workers at a time when they are so hard to come by cannot be stressed enough. It is vital to be able to deliver projects of the highest quality, especially when you’re involved in the high-end of the market,” says site manager Mark Mahon.

Superior workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of Ard Glen Construction. Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so since the Covid-19 pandemic. From concept to completion, the Ard Glen team is with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.

Whether your next project is a high end new build, renovation of a period home, extension or commercial projects such as a hotel refurbs or care home, Ard Glen Construction’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Wicklow contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from designers and scores of satisfied clients.

By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with quantity surveyors, engineers and architects, and using only the very best building products, this fully insured contractor is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients.

Elaborating on the services Ard Glen Construction provides, Mark comments: “With regards to the residential sector, the majority of our work is high-end one-off projects. We’re renowned for our quality service and high level of workmanship. Working to tight deadlines in a cost-effective manner is something that we thrive on.

“Commercially, some of our high-profile projects would include the Fleet Street Hotel in Temple Bar and Barretstown in Ballymore Eustace. The Fleet Street Hotel project consisted of a complete refurbishment of the ground floor reception where TGI Fridays had been previously located. The basement renovation included a full demolition of an old nightclub and the construction of a modern, bright breakfast area with new bathrooms. We also refurbished the existing O’Sullivan’s Bar into ‘Café 1920’.

“More recently, we repurposed existing bedrooms in Barretstown into a new studio called ‘Aladina’.  Barretestown is a not-for-profit camp for children with cancer and other serious illnesses.”

Mark continues: “We also have a lot of experience working on listed buildings. We have developed our service where we use traditional materials and techniques as we conserve, restore and rebuild period and listed buildings. The aim in most cases is to restore a building to its former glory, and this can only be achieved by working closely with all stakeholders, including conservation officers, planners, architects and sub-contractors. It has to be a team effort.”

One of Ard Glen Construction’s current projects is a complete rebuild on a 7,500 sq. ft. three-storey dwelling on Killiney’s plush Vico Road. “It’s an 18-month project that is nearing completion. We demolished the existing building and rebuilt it from the ground up. The footprint of the new dwelling involved a substantial amount of rock removal in order for the building to sit back into the existing rock face. The front is fully glazed to take in the spectacular sea view,” the affable site manager explains.

“We’ve recently completed a new one-off three-storey residential build in Donnybrook. We are also on the refurbishment and conservation of a period home in BlackRock which has a new generous rear extension and a new studio to the back garden. We’re always kept busy.”

Ard Glen Construction goes to great lengths to keep costs down, especially at a time when some material prices continue to skyrocket.

“Procurement ordering in advance is crucial. You have to have your ducks in a row before you build. We regularly negotiate with our suppliers on the best prices. We also engage with the client’s QS and our own QS to highlight any extra cost that may occur at the start of the project. Honesty and transparency are key.”

As Ard Glen Construction continues to go from strength to strength, the company would like to take this opportunity to thank its clients and suppliers for their ongoing support as well as its staff and sub-contractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise.
