Established in 2001 and based in Buncrana, Co. Donegal, McCallion Group specialises in delivering high-quality construction projects nationwide, primarily in the commercial sector.

Fronted by brother-and-sister Shay McCallion and Catherine Dougan, the company offers complete construction services, including Main Contracting, Groundworks and Civil Engineering Services. It has vast experience in both the public and private sectors as well as retail, commercial and residential. The Inishowen-based contractor’s reputation for excellence is a product of knowledge, team-work, dedication and total commitment to achieving exceptional results.

Outstanding workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of McCallion Group. Its commitment to quality means that all contracts are continuously monitored and assessed to assure that they are completed on time, within the agreed budget and, most importantly, to the client’s exact standards and specifications.

The family-run business’ mission is to value people and clients, promote Health & Safety and produce complete quality in all projects that it delivers, all in a way that ensures profitability and cost-effectiveness to exceed clients’ expectations.

Health & Safety is at the core of the company, and never more so than in this Covid-19 age. McCallion Group has a zero-accident tolerance and is continually striving for improvement. All sites have trained Health & Safety supervisors who are supported by the company’s Health & Safety manager, officers and the entire management team.

Quality is managed in-house by an experienced and skilled management team who have an eye for detail and the knowledge behind them to ensure that all projects are completed to the highest standards. McCallion Group’s Management Systems are aligned with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001: 2015 and OHSAS 18001:2001 for best practice to manage quality and occupational Health & Safety.

McCallion Group has extensive experience in areas such as Design and Build, renovations / refurbishments, civil engineering, commercial projects, Residential and heritage / conservations. Civil engineering is one of the company’s greatest strengths. It has its own plant, machinery, Engineers and a full labour force to carry out all civil works.

“We have the full capability to provide a one-stop shop for all your building requirements,” project manager Brian Grant explains.

“We employ approximately 50 people comprising of site management, engineers, civils staff, Health & Safety personnel and Head Office support staff. Our in-house Groundworks & Civil Engineering capabilities are an enormous asset which gives us greater control of our project outcomes. As well as this the company has an extensive Supply Chain of tried and tested Subcontractors who we have repeatedly worked with over the years.

“As a family-run business, we’re able to offer our clients the personal touch that you may not get from the larger construction firms. Shay McCallion is a major presence in the company and is very much in tune with activities across all sites. He’s always at the end of the phone to deal with any queries a client or stakeholder may have.”

One of McCallion Group’s largest clients is LIDL, whom it has been building / refurbishing stores across Ireland for the past 15 years. The Donegal contractor may builds, renovate and extends up to seven LIDL stores a year. It is currently constructing a new store for the retail giant in Knocknacarra, Co. Galway and is refurbishing and extending an existing store in Sligo. McCallion Group recently completed two other projects for LIDL in Derry and Bray within the last few months.

“The company has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with LIDL for many years now,” Brian continues.

“We have the capability and track record for completing their projects on time and within budget. It takes a certain attitude and culture to be able to deliver these fast paced projects time and time again and that’s testament to the experienced staff we have that are very familiar with the LIDL projects and their requirements.”

One of the largest commercial projects McCallion Group has ever worked on was the construction of the new Pramercia headquarters in Letterkenny. The project commenced in early 2016 and it took nine months to complete the 61,000m2 carpark site. McCallion Group was responsible for all site and earthworks to include the excavation and disposal of 50,000m3 of inert soil offsite.

The company also constructed all the ancillary buildings, installed all site services such as foul drainage, over 10km of cable ducting, 5km of kerbs, landscaping, paving, concreting works, 25,000m2 of tarmacadam road surfacing and line-marking. The buildings themselves were four-storey, prefabricated modular buildings. McCallion Group installed all services to these buildings, the substructure and structural steel.

McCallion Group was delighted to be appointed main contractor for the new Buncrana Primary Care Centre in 2020. It’s the company’s first large-scale design and build healthcare project and comes with the added bonus of being located on its doorstep!

“Given our location on the Inishowen Peninsula, it’s a novelty for us to get a project of this size so close to home,” Brian says.

“The building will provide approximately 5,500m2 of clinical space over 3No. Floors accommodating a wide range of services such as GP, Public Health Nursing, Physiotherapy, Mental Health, TUSLA, Dentistry etc. The building comprises of an insitu RC Frame and also includes an underground carpark. The envelope works consist of Render, Curtain Walling and Stonework Cladding. Works commenced in July 2020 and the completed project will be handed over to the HSE late 2021 with the centre projected to be open in early 2022.

“The company has also recently started work on a new six-storey residential development in Dublin 8. We work across all sectors and no job would be considered too big or too small.”

A contractor that is clearly going from strength to strength, McCallion Group would like to take this opportunity to thank its clients and suppliers for their continued support as well as its staff, design teams and sub-contractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise.

Here’s to the next 20 years!
