McStan Construction was established in 2008 by Kilkenny man John Staunton, who has decades of experience in the building industry and still continues to have an extensive hands-on ethic with all activities.
In 2010 John was joined by Niall Duggan and together over the years they have established a business that has gone from strength to strength to now one of Leinster’s leading Premier Healthcare, Construction and industry-leading Contracting Companies.
Today, McStan Construction is synonymous with the professional execution of construction in the most demanding clinical live environments within the building sector, where developing and renovating critical healthcare facilities in the middle of fully operational hospitals and other healthcare environments is an everyday procedure.
McStan Construction was established 18 years ago to provide professional and efficient building solutions.
“We are committed to delivering high quality projects, safely, within budget and on time, explained the amiable Managing Director.
“We adopt a business partnering and collaborative approach to all relationships with clients, Design teams, employees, sub-contractors and suppliers.”
This approach enables positive and successful delivery of projects and McStan Construction has a proven track record in substantial repeat business from both satisfied clients and consulting teams.
“Over the years, the business has evolved organically to cater to this specific niche market but by no means has it ever limited us in our ability to continue to grow in other areas.”
McStan has built new state-of-the-art fire stations in Graiguenamanagh and Urlingford for Kilkenny County Council.
McStan have also worked extensively for Griffin Group Hotels at Hotel Kilkenny, FerryCarrig Hotel and the award-winning Boutique Spa at The Monart.
“We work with the O’Callaghan Group Hotels, at The Green Hotel St Stephens Green, Davenport Hotel, The Mont Hotel & The Alex Hotel.
“Other valued Clients include the Osprey Hotel in Naas, Tulfarris Golf Club in Wicklow, Mount Juliet Estate, Hoban Hotel, Kilkenny Golf Club, Paris Texas, The Front Room, The Brewery Corner, and indeed the building of the New O’Sullivans Brewery in the Heart of Kilkenny City in 2025.”
McStan Construction delivered on all of these projects while the buildings were fully occupied and completed full strip-out, demolition, alterations, upgrade and fit-out works package to function areas of internal floors and mezzanine floor levels, external façade works and external ground floor courtyard areas.
The business has repetitive contracts from long term clients in healthcare include UPMC ‘Aut Even’ Kilkenny and UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford, The HSE at St Luke’s Hospital, Kilcreene Hospital and St Canice’s in Kilkenny & St Dympna’s in Carlow.
“We carry out a large quantity of projects each year for a number of Bespoke Medical Providers across several counties, Orchard Health Care, Aurelia Medical, Affidea, VHI Healthcare & Swiftcare clinics, with whom a strong relationship has been fostered over the many numerous years.
“Our projects have varied from the New CT unit, Outpatients Clinic, Security & Entrance building installed at St Luke’s Hospital, to the new X-Ray Unit in Kilcreene Hospital, P.E.T Scanning unit in Whitfield, to currently on site at the New Double MRI unit at Aut Even Hospital.
“Our work has predominantly transcended from traditional building to state-of-the-art medical construction and John finds it an incredibly interesting and educational area to be involved in on a daily basis.
“At any given time, we operate in excess of ten to twelve different sites, covering Kilkenny, Waterford, Carlow, Naas and Dublin.
“Infrastructure has played its part in where we do business and because of the linking motorway access, we can get from Kilkenny to Waterford in 25 minutes.
“Waterford has become very accessible from Kilkenny and that has led to huge growth for the firm in this part of Munster, whereas there’s still poor infrastructure to further develop our business in parts of Wexford or Tipperary in comparison.
“Another aspect of our business is where we are retrofitting a lot of fire doors in Hospitals, Hotels, and public buildings as the Part B section of the regulations is being updated and enforced for safety to all patrons, and that is keeping us very busy, as again it is a specific niece business that is highly regulated.”
As a Company McStan Construction has grown into a significant employer of skilled staff and would usually have a crew of anywhere from 60 – 80 workers on sites each day ranging between direct employees and permanent subcontractors.
“I have to say, we are so very grateful for all the regular work we are getting in the healthcare and hospitality sectors,” John told Building Ireland magazine.
“We have a lot of repeat clients and we value them deeply, and over the years the relationship has evolved from clients to friends.
“From a very young age, it was always my ambition to run my own construction business where we could do things our own way.
“My approach has always been hands-on, and I have my own ideas as to how a project should be delivered with value and ease of mind to our various clients.
“The service we provide is one of reliability, trust, value, and quality, I tend to visit most sites myself every day of the week.”
In everything we do, John and his team give a very personal touch: “We like to think we are very amenable and approachable, and we try to provide a very honest service.
“There is a culture in the building industry where contractors competitively tender a project and then start a culture of added expenses and create variation after variation which ends up in a project being a far cry from the initial quote.
“We’re very fair, reasonable and above board and I would have to believe that is the reason why we get such a vast amount of repetitive work from Architects, QS Firms, Engineers and indeed the Customers themselves.
“We provide an excellent service; we are meticulous in our quality finishes and thankfully it results in the same clients coming back to us year after year. We are looking forward to a busy 2026 especially in the healthcare sector.”
At the heart of the business is an exceptional team, to whom the founder is indebted for their skilled input and loyalty over the years.
“I have never lost anyone since starting in 2008 which is reassuring, as there would be no ‘McStan’ without your team,” John concludes.
Head of Operations and Management is Niall Duggan, who leads the way on all projects. Rebecca Wall is the Office Administrator, dealing with all HR, Payroll and legislation duties.
The firm’s Project Managers are PJ Dowling, Ollie Rafter and Gavin O’Keeffe who again are with the firm for many years.
McStan Construction have a great crew of Block-layers, Carpenters, Plasterers, Metal Fixers, Joiners, Fabricators, and specialist sub-contractors and every one of them is vitally important to the team.
