Parkbourne Consulting Engineers (Parkbourne Consultancy Ltd) is a leading multidisciplinary M&E consulting engineers practice dedicated to providing high-quality, value-driven design solutions within the build environment.
Working across most sectors and at all stages of a building’s life cycle, the practice is fronted by father-and-son team Bryan and Ian McCormack, who have almost 60 years’ combined experience working from feasibility stage through to handover and beyond on a comprehensive range of projects from single dwellings through to large mixed-use, multi-storey and high-rise developments.
With offices in Dalkey and Carlow town, Parkbourne boasts a proven track record offering mechanical design, electrical design and building services consultancy across the commercial office fit out, retail, pharmaceutical, hotel, student accommodation, sports & leisure, industrial, residential and healthcare sectors among others.
The practice, which is heavily engaged in the high-end residential sector at present, continues to grow, evolve and embrace new technology as it strives to offer its valued clients an unrivalled service.
“The nature of our work has evolved,” Ian explains.
“We’re increasingly being brought in much earlier in the design process, which allows us to influence outcomes in a more meaningful way, particularly around buildability, energy performance and long-term operational efficiency. Historically, M&E services were often considered later in the process, which could result in services being squeezed into restricted areas. Early engagement allows these challenges to be addressed properly from the outset.
“Our team of engineers has increased, allowing us to strengthen our capacity while maintaining the same level of senior oversight and hands-on involvement across all projects.
“In addition, we are now working on BIM projects, allowing for improved coordination, accuracy and collaboration across design teams. This technology has improved how we test, coordinate and verify our designs, but it’s still the engineering judgement behind those tools that makes the difference.”
He continues: “There’s a lot of noise in the market around sustainability, but our role is to cut through that and give clients honest, practical advice. Not every building can be fully electrified, and not every solution suits every project. Our experience allows us to strike that balance.
“We’re seeing a more informed client now. Sustainability is no longer about ticking a box; it’s about how the building actually performs five or 10 years down the line. That’s where our soft landings approach really proves its value.
“On our high-end residential projects, our clients deal directly with the engineers responsible for their project. There’s no disconnect between design intent and delivery. Senior involvement throughout the project reduces risk and improves outcomes. We take a very personal approach – our name is on every drawing.
“Soft landings aren’t an add-on for us; it’s part of doing the job properly. Buildings don’t behave exactly as predicted, and we stay involved to respond to that. Post-occupancy feedback improves the next project… it’s a continuous loop.”
Parkbourne Consulting Engineers was established by Bryan who was joined by Ian after he cut his teeth with one of the larger M&E consultancies. Both are members of the Institution of Engineering and Technology who bring 37 and 20 years’ experience respectively to each project. The practice provides low and zero carbon design solutions, engaging with architects and clients early on in the scheme to achieve the best possible outcome for the life of their buildings.
Parkbourne has amassed exceptionally varied experience and provides professional, value-added service to a diverse range of clients in the public, private, industrial and commercial sectors nationwide. Its ability to exceed client’s expectations consistently generates repeat business and positive recommendations.
In healthcare, Parkbourne Consulting Engineers has provided expert M&E engineering solutions to numerous Centric Healthcare, Baxter Healthcare and Repromed clinics, while housing developments in Ballyquirke, Co. Galway, Hemingway in Clane, Co. Kildare, Kilheale Manor in Kill, Co. Kildare and Rathmill Manor in Rathcoole, Co. Dublin have also benefited from their expert touch, not to mention countless high-end private residential houses.
Some of the commercial projects successfully delivered include Conlans BMW / Jaguar Land Rover showrooms in Naas, Jones Engineering’s Leixlip warehouse, Nobber Fire Station in Co. Meath and numerous office fit outs, including Spaces, Monster, Mars, Ancestry and Principle as well as a project for GPT in Galway.
“We provide M&E consultancy services to bring projects from the early stages of design through tender drawings to construction and sign-off. With our soft landings approach, we will often remain involved as consulting engineers on buildings long after the construction phase is complete. It’s essentially an aftercare service,” Ian continues.
“The main areas we work in are high-end residential, housing estates / apartments, commercial and healthcare, working predominantly for private clients, architects, the HSE and major fit out contractors, with the majority of our work being referrals and repeat business.”
Although their work is currently confined to Ireland, the directors of Parkbourne Consulting Engineers have a wealth of experience working internationally, having provided services across Europe and the US. The keen personal interest Ian and Bryan take in every project is one of the many things that sets Parkbourne apart.
“We are a family-orientated practice and as such the work is very personal to us. We take a lot of care and this is much more than just a job to us. We bring a very personal element to it and this is something our clients seem to appreciate,” Ian says.
The soft landings approach adopted by Parkbourne Consulting Engineers is also hugely important. This strategy is designed to ensure that the transition from construction to occupation is turbulence-free and that operational performance is optimised. This covers every phase from inception and briefing through pre-handover, handover, initial aftercare and extended aftercare and post-occupancy evaluation.
The affable Carlow man concludes by saying: “Looking ahead, our focus remains on delivering well-considered, buildable solutions that stand the test of time. Growth for us is about doing better work, not just more of it. Good M&E design isn’t about following trends, it’s about understanding buildings, people and how systems actually operate in the real world.”
For every step of the journey, Parkbourne Consulting Engineers provide invaluable expertise and that’s one of the reasons why this outstanding family business has earned a stellar reputation throughout the construction industry as an M&E consultancy partner of choice.
