As it prepares to celebrate 20 years in business, KD Group continues to go from strength to strength by providing unrivalled mechanical contracting services to clients across a wide range of sectors.
Established in 2003 by cousins Kieran and David Staunton, the Castlebar-headquartered company was delighted to be shortlisted for Sub-Contractor of the Year at the 2022 Irish Construction Industry Awards. No stranger to award ceremonies, KD Group was previously a finalist in the Large Sub-Contractor of the Year category at the 2019 Irish Construction Awards, while in the same year, it picked up three accolades – Regional, Driving for Work and Consistent High Achiever – at the NISO Awards.
From humble beginnings, KD Group has grown in knowledge, expertise and size. Focused solely on the Irish market, it now employs more than 50 people both onsite and at its headquarters in the N5 Business Park in Castlebar. Technology has been instrumental in the advancement of mechanical and electrical engineering, Building Information Modelling (BIM) has proven invaluable to KD Group. The contractor implements BIM into most projects and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The use of BIM also facilitates the greater use of its off-site prefabrication facility.

KD Group provides services to the commercial, residential, healthcare, education, pharmaceutical, leisure, and historical sectors to name but a few. Some of its current / recent outstanding projects include St. Camillus’ Hospital in Limerick, Tuam RCC (Residential Care Centre), IT Sligo – Block L and Fitzwilliam Street Garda Station in Dublin. Leinster House, Kevin Street Garda Station in Dublin and Kylemore Abbey in Co. Galway are just three of the high-profile projects it has worked on. The IDA, OPW, JJ Rhatigan, Conack Construction and Boyle Construction are among its valued clients.
The St. Camillus’s Hospital project consists of the construction of a new 75-bed elderly care ward. The mechanical services installations works carried out by KD Group include site natural gas services, natural gas installations, external mains water pipeworks, air-to-water heat pump installation, comms room cooling installations and mechanical ventilation and air handling. The contract value is €2.45 million.
The IT Sligo – Block L project comprises an extensive deep refurbishment and extension of the existing block to accommodate facilities for the Faculty of Engineering & Design and YAADA (Yeats Academy of Arts, Design and Architecture) Department. The mechanical services installations include commissioning, planned preventative maintenance, heating and ventilation installation, water service installation, above ground soils and waste installation, fuel supply services, first aid and firefighting services, and BMS installation. The contract is valued at just under €1 million.
The Tuam RCC project involves the construction of a new 50-bed residential care centre. The mechanical services installation package, which is valued at €2.1 million, includes heating and ventilation installation, water service installation, above ground soils and waste installation, fuel supply services, first aid and firefighting services, and BMS installation.
The recently-completed Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station project included the full internal refurbishment and repair of the existing four-storey-over-basement building at numbers 24-28 Fitzwilliam Street and the two-storey-over-basement building at number 30 Fitzgibbon Street. Works on the listed buildings were completed in line with the requirements of Directive 2010/31/EU + Nearly Zero Energy Building.
The scope of mechanical works included strip out of existing services, heating and cooling installations, water service and ventilation installations, natural gas and drainage installations, BMS installations, fire safety equipment and process installations. The contract value was just under €800,000.
In addition, KD Group is currently carrying out boiler upgrade works at courthouses in Tralee, Limerick and Castlebar. The company prides itself on its ability to complete works on time and within budget.
KD Group overcame the challenges posed by Covid-19 by putting in place effective procedures to mitigate transmissions and allow work to proceed as normal. Some of these measures included work from home, social distancing onsite and continuous communication of Covid-19 work procedures with all employees.
