The company is fronted by local man Shane Black who has been a member of the Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCSI) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) since graduating from Bolton Street, Dublin with an honours degree in Property Economics over 20 years ago. The SCSI is the leading professional body for property, land and construction professionals in Ireland.
A fully-qualified Chartered Surveyor, Shane is married to Grainne and they have three children – Senan (15), Cormac (13) and Niamh (11).
Shane is joined by a top-class team that includes Barbara Byrne (head of New Home Sales), Grainne Duffy (Administration) and his brother Niall (head of Second-Hand Residential Sales) as well as Karen Craig who has recently joined the team. Shane looks after Commercial Sales and also assists Barbara with New Home Sales. Taaffe Egan Developments, Ashcroft Developments, J Murphy Development, Coreet Ltd, Wakeward Developments and Kingsgate Property Development Ltd are among the respected developers who have put their trust in Shane Black Property Advisors & Agents Ltd to sell new homes on their behalf.
As an independent estate agent, Shane Black Property Advisors & Agents Ltd faces strong competition from the branded agencies. But the company continues to punch above its weight thanks to its exceptional service and strong links with the local community.
“We’ve always got great support from people in the locality,” Shane says.
“We give it back by sponsoring sports clubs, particularly St Colmcille’s GAA who I continue to play junior ‘D’ football for at the age of 44. We also sponsor their Cúl Kids Academy which is very successful. My brothers and I grew up playing sports and that’s what underpins us. We’re embedded in our community and are proud to be local.”
A past-pupil of Tullyallen National School and St Joseph’s CBS in Drogheda, Shane’s involvement with Glen Emmets GAA, Drogheda Boys FC and St Colmcille’s GAA (who he joined after moving to Bettystown in 1997) means he is very well-known in the greater Drogheda area. “Sport has been a massive part of my life and I’m still involved in a playing and coaching capacity with St Colmcille’s. I’ve met so many people through it which has stood to me in business,” he points out.
Shane’s passion for property was instilled in him by his father Shaun, who was a joiner by trade.
“I knew from an early age what I wanted to do career-wise,” he explains.
“My father was a joiner in Drogheda, as was his father before him. So the Black family name has been associated with the trade for a long time. I used to love going out to sites and new houses with my dad to measure them up for new windows. When I got a bit older, I got summer work with auctioneers and builders. That led to me studying Property Economics in Bolton Street and then learning my trade with other estate agents in the area.”
Undeterred by the economic crash and the recession that followed, Shane established Shane Black Property Advisors & Agents Ltd in September 2008. From humble beginnings, it has grown into the thriving and highly-regarded business it is today.
“It was a tough time to be starting a new business,” he recalls.
“Paul Muldoon, who is my accountant, gave me some office space in the South Quay Buildings in Drogheda and my wife Grainne was also very supportive at a time when we had a young family coming along. As you could imagine, opportunities were few and far between at the time, but I managed to get a couple of sales and did some BER assessing.
“We created a website with the help of Caoimhe Mulroy from ‘Once Upon Design’, who we continue to work with, and that proved to be a game-changer for us. We were also one of the first estate agents in the area to embrace social media and that gave us another leg-up. Caoimhe designed our logos and helped us to establish our brand, which continues to stand out with its distinctive blue, white and black colours.”
He continues: “In 2010, my youngest brother Niall came on board. He studied Estate Management in Edinburgh and has been a key figure in our growth. Barbara Byrne joined us in 2015 and Grainne Duffy joined four years ago. It’s a real team effort where everyone does a little bit of everything.
“It wasn’t until about 2013 that New and Second-Hand Residential Sales started to pick up again. We have been extremely busy on the sales side of things in recent years. We pride ourselves on our customer service. It all starts when you phone Grainne in the office. We have the best staff and love helping first-time buyers in particular.
“A lot of buyers and sellers compliment us on our business which is very gratifying.”
