With high-end workmanship and diligence invariably to the fore, every new home built by Vincent Walsh Construction over the past decade and a half has been finished to the most exacting standards. Quality and consistency are the bedrock of this industry-leading, client-focused family business and that’s why the County Meath contractor’s services remain in big demand.
Vincent Walsh Construction’s track record of building excellence is such that, when touching base with the Moynalvey man recently, it was no surprise to learn that there’s keen demand for his luxurious new build homes.
“We have plenty of projects ongoing, thankfully,” Vincent confirmed when we interrupted his busy schedule one windy Friday afternoon in June. “A lot is happening in terms of the private one-off new dwellings. We also have a lot of tender requests as we speak. Our schedule is full currently, which is a great position to be in.”
Since the inception of his eponymous contracting company, Vincent, who specialises in high-quality, bespoke homes and is the archetypal hands-on director – both a carpenter and builder by trade – has always insisted on meticulous attention to detail throughout every stage of the building process, culminating in an impressive portfolio of new builds, extensions, and renovations – impressive calling cards which result in a steady flow of business through positive word of mouth.
As far as Vincent is concerned, quality is a given and is non-negotiable: “We provide a complete turnkey service from greenfield site through to handover and we’re building large homes, dream homes, that people are paying a lot of money for. They don’t expect or accept anything less than perfect, so that’s what we give them. Clients are right to demand high standards of workmanship and a builder should strive to reach those levels all the time.
“It’s as easy to do it right as wrong. My motto is ‘do it right from the start’ – don’t overlook anything. If it’s wrong from the start, then you are never going to get it right at the end.”
Experience has taught the Meath man that sometimes you have to step back take a deep breath and think of the bigger picture because building a home is a marathon, not a sprint, and absorbing a small headache early on can often defer a much larger one for all parties further down the line:
“You learn from your mistakes and I’m not perfect, nobody is. I’ve learned that sometimes you will spot something that isn’t perfect, and it can be a bitter pill to address it and set it right. It could take you a day, but it will be worth it if it keeps you on course for the level of finish we all want.”
While he has made his reputation building, extending, refurbishing and fitting out high-quality homes, in the current climate Vincent is more geared toward new builds. “We have been involved in mostly new builds in recent times, but extensions and renovations are still a possibility for us. We have a refurbishment contract just started recently,” he reveals.
“I like to be able to leave every job that I’m 100 percent happy with it and where the client is happy, and we have a good relationship.
“It’s all about the client. You are working for them, and you need to take the time to talk to them properly and find out exactly what their needs and wishes are. Communication is key. Whatever it is they want, don’t shy away from it. If you are prepared to go that extra step for them, it makes all the difference.”
At the time of writing, Vincent and his trusty team were working on five new builds (in Kilcloon (2), Batterstown, Kilcock, and Moynalvey, with another set to start in Dunshaughlin) all of which were at various stages of completion. “It makes a huge difference to be able to work close to home with little travel time required.
“We have a great team of subcontractors who I work with all the time. This is a key factor to my business. All our subcontractors work well together and strive for the same level of workmanship as myself.”
With an eye on the future, Vincent is starting to think about the next generation. “I have one daughter and three sons, and it would be nice to see them getting involved if that’s what they decide to do. Both my older sons are currently registered with Solas doing their Carpentry apprenticeships. If this is the road they decide they want to go down, then you show them the levels and standards you need to be working at.
“If you provide excellent work, the rest will take care of itself. We have an extensive list of satisfied clients and I’m still in touch with many of them. We also have a good reputation with professionals in the industry and it’s always nice when architects and engineers compliment you on your work and recommend you to their future clients.”
