Established in February 2023 in Kinvara, Co. Galway, Vara Construction Services (Vara Construction Ltd) has hit the ground running with a growing list of successfully completed projects in both the residential and commercial sectors.
Owner Niall Curtin and his multi-disciplinary team cover every aspect of a project, from project management, civil works and site engineering to carpentry, roofing and shuttering. An abbreviation of the quaint southwest Co. Galway seaport village in which it is located, ‘Vara’ strives to be a one-stop shop for all your construction needs, from the smallest jobs to the biggest ones.
“We’ve grown quickly and earned an enviable reputation for quality construction over the past two-and-a-half years,” Niall enthuses.
“Our goal is to provide peace of mind to our clients that the job will be done to spec’ on time and within budget, and to the highest Health & Safety standards. While it’s been a case of ‘so far, so good’, you’re only as good as your last job and can’t get ahead of yourself.”
Niall’s passion for construction and work ethic was instilled in him by his mother Kathleen and late father Mick, who had a plant hire business and also worked for Clare County Council. “I was always around building sites with him when I was younger,” he recalls.
Niall qualified as a carpenter in 2007 but, with the recession starting to bite and job opportunities few and far between, he went back to college and graduated from LIT (now TUS) with a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management. The affable Kinvara man then moved to Australia and also spent time in the US before returning home to work for JJ Rhatigan and OCC Construction on civil engineering projects across Connacht and Munster.
Exceptional workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of Vara Construction Services. From concept to completion, Niall and his professional team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.
Vara Construction Services’ one-stop shop approach ensures that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Co. Galway contractor’s reputation for high spec’ work and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from satisfied clients.
By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with design teams and using only the very best building products, this fully insured contractor and CIF member is able to deliver the highest quality construction.
Vara Construction Services’ small but dedicated team is supported and supplemented by the same tried and trusted subcontractors, which are mostly based in Galway, Clare and Athlone. The contractor’s main suppliers are TJ O’Mahony’s in Gort, John O’Donnell Hardware in Kinvara, Flynn’s of Lackagh, Ganlys in Athlone, Cannon Concrete in Loughrea and Esker Concrete in Athenry.
“We enjoy an excellent relationship with our suppliers and design teams. Brendan Slevin and Patrick Fahey, who are both based in south Galway, are the engineers we would have the most dealings with,” Niall explains.
“But above all else, it’s about having good staff and subbies, and we’re very lucky in that regard. We employ people directly and several more on a subcontract basis. They’re all top-class tradespeople who have helped us to get to where we are.”
Business is flying for Niall whose work is split evenly between residential and commercial projects.
“We’ve just finished a new one-off house in Kinvara and are starting two more in Kilcolgan and Kinvara. We build beautiful, contemporary, energy efficient homes averaging between 2,500 and 3,000 sq. ft. in size. We can build to turnkey requirements and do all the groundworks before and after. We also specialise in home renovations and extensions, and are finishing off one at the minute,” he continues.
“On the commercial side of things, one of our current jobs involves converting O’Connor’s Bar in Ballinderreen into a café and refurbishing it. We’re also putting in a new car park and building a new house on the same site. We demolished the existing house and Irish Eco Homes have supplied the timber frame for the new one.
“We’re probably at full capacity with current projects, but know that won’t always be the case.”
As Vara Construction Services continues to go from strength to strength, Niall would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients and suppliers for their continued support as well as his staff and subcontractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise. He is also grateful for the support he receives at home from his wife Celine and children Joey, Ollie, Kayla and Danny, who keep him busy when not on a construction site.
