Dublin City Council has hosted a visiting delegation from Malta examining ways to make construction products safer.
The National Building Control and Market Surveillance Office (NBCMSO), based in the Council, welcomed colleagues from the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) to Ireland for a four day study visit.
It focused on the market surveillance of Construction Products and follows an expression of interest from the MCCAA to learn more about Ireland’s approach in this regard. That includes inspection methodologies, risk-based planning and surveillance, product checks and the actions taken where non-compliance is identified.
During the visit, the Maltese delegation met with representatives of the NBCMSO at its offices in Palace Street, Dublin, for an overview of Irish legislation, the role of the NBCMSO and the National Market Surveillance Strategy for Construction Products: Ireland 2026.
The programme combined discussions with market surveillance inspections to a number of Economic Operators and a visit to an accredited testing laboratory, providing opportunities to share experience on inspection practices, product testing, compliance assessment and approaches to addressing non-compliance.
The visit concluded with a feedback session to reflect on the experience and identify key learning from the exchange.
The study visit provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the Irish and Maltese Market Surveillance Authorities and to share practical experience in the interest of strengthened cooperation in the implementation of market surveillance of construction products in Europe.
