Mullane Civil Works and Plant Hire have grown to become one of Ireland’s most progressive Civil Engineering & Building Contractors. Building Ireland heard more about the company which will be celebrating 20 years since becoming incorporated in 1998.
Mullane Civil Works and Plant Hire may only be incorporated the last two decades but the family business is running twice as long and currently thriving as well as it ever has been.
Based in Carraroe, Co Sligo, they are one of the leading companies in their field, offering their clientele a wide range of machinery, from mini through to heavy duty and also boast a varied nationwide customer base.
From large commercial jobs to local authority and private domestic work, Mullane Civil Works and Plant Hire have the experience and expertise to complete any job both on time and on budget.
This past April saw the company branch out and start up a brand new venture. ‘MP Hire Ltd’ has been going strong ever since.
The new business is a tool sales, hire and repair shop which is located on the Old Dublin Road in Carraroe, supplying customers with a wide range of tools and equipment with friendly and professional staff to help them find the right tool for the job.
Gary Mullane and his brother Shane have taken over the running of the family business from their parents, with the former holding the role as General Manager which sees him back and forth with a hectic schedule between both businesses. Nonetheless, Gary was able to take the time to explain to Building Ireland what they’re all about.
“We’re now coming up on 20 years established as the current company but we’d have had our 40th anniversary (as a family business) a couple of months ago,” he outlined.
“We’re operating with 35 staff and my parents Alice and John are the two directors – they’re both retired now. I’m the General Manager here and my brother Shane is the Site Manager.”
As it stands, Mullane Plant Hire is one of the country’s most progressive Civil Engineering & Building Contractors. While the company is based in the north west of Ireland, it offers nationwide coverage for its customers and boasts a large portfolio of modern, safe and well maintained plant, tools and equipment.
As aforementioned, the company founded by John Mullane has been in operation since the mid-1970s and became incorporated in 1998.
Mullane Civil Works and Plant Hire have completed many major projects to the highest standard of quality, with great emphasis on safety for clients in the housing, transport, industrial, commercial, utilities, energy, waste and leisure sectors.
The company prides itself on its philosophy of safety, value for money, project planning and programming and quality for the client on each individual project. They are Safe T Cert accredited and have a full environmental system and Quality Assurance system in place.
The firm also have a strong local team of managers, engineers, safety representatives, supervisors and skilled operatives which are dedicated to their policy of a safe and productive working environment.
Such strong values for safety, aligned with quality workmanship, go a long way to explaining why Mullane Civil Works and Plant Hire continue to obtain repeat business from high-profile clients all over the country.
“ESB Networks, Sligo and Leitrim County Councils and the National Roads Authority would be the types of clients we have here,” explained Gary.
“We mostly cover the west of Ireland but we’re willing to go all over the country when it comes to our work. One of the more recent aspects that we have taken on in the last 10 years is finishing out housing estates which were left unfinished during the downturn.”
Indeed the economic recession had its effect on practically every business in Ireland and Mullane Civil Works and Plant Hire were no different.
However, the last few years in particular have saw a steady increase in business and Gary is very much looking forward to the New Year ahead.
“It’s good. It has picked up big time heading into 2018 and hopefully it will continue like that throughout the year,” he stated.
“We’re out of it (the recession) this last three years now but we were effected and it was tough enough getting through it. But we did, thankfully.”
It’s now 40 years (and counting) for the Mullanes out Carraroe way, so what has been the secret to the company’s success for all these years?
“I think it’s down to the high standard of work that we produce and the fact we’re such a long-standing company,” said Gary.
As for the machinery the company operates with, the Mullanes bought a brand new Scania grab truck in the early part of 2017 along with a Volvo EC250 excavator and one more excavator.
Altogether, Mullane Civil Works and Plant Hire are have 11 trucks in operation and up around 40 diggers to ensure that the demand from clientele is met.
Clearly Gary and Shane felt there was the same demand in the market for a tool hire and sales shop around their local area as well and took the decision to open up the doors at MP Hire Ltd in April.
It has been a case of so far, so good for the new venture, which won’t find its first year anniversary coming, earning rave reviews from local customers that are delighted with the excellent service.
“We opened a tool hire, machine and sales shop in April and so far it has been going really well for us,” Gary enthused.
“It has just taken off for us and I have to say I’m delighted with the way things have gone with it so far.”
There isn’t much more you can ask for than that.
