Setting the standard for construction services

20 Jun , 2018

Paul Smyth Building Services (PSBS) has earned itself an impressive reputation for some of the excellent projects it has carried out all across the country. Building Ireland learned all about the Co Monaghan-based business from Managing Director Paul Smyth.

Next year will see Paul Smyth Building Services mark a decade since first getting up and running and, as the man himself will tell you, the last nine years have flown by for him out Cornamundy way.

Since setting up in 2009, Paul Smyth Building Services – better known as PSBS – has always prided itself as a reliable building service with the ability to deliver consistently across their geographies, service lines and sectors.

Paul prides his business on being competitive and took some time out of a schedule which is becoming increasingly hectic as of late to give Building Ireland the rundown on what they’re all about.

“Right now we’re employing nine full-time staff and then we’ve subcontractors we use for jobs as well,” explained Paul.

“I’m the Managing Director here and my son Brendan is involved as well. Basically, what we do is provide any building service for a client, carrying out work on new buildings from the ground up.”

Whether they are building an extension, building a new bespoke family home or carrying out routine maintenance to one of their commercial clients, PSBS are renowned for only having one standard – the very best.

Operating from Cornamundy in Co Monaghan, the company has built a reputation within the industry for quality, integrity, reliability and a hugely ethical approach to all of its business activities.

On a variety of buildings, historic to modern, public, commercial or private, PSBS have been involved from the initial concept, through design and to the final completion, co-ordinating many different trades, whilst maintaining a professional and personal services.

The team at PSBS are highly motivated and the company culture is proactive and client focused, according to its owner and MD.

With an understanding of traditional building methods and more modern technical advancements, PSBS are able to complete the most demanding of projects successfully.

That understanding of traditional building methods comes from Paul’s own experience in the industry, which he filled us in on.

“I’m a carpenter by trade,” he outlined. “I’ve worked for several different companies down the years on different projects and gained some good experience along the way.

“I set this company up shortly after doing some work with Glanbia and we started with a couple of good projects around Monaghan town. We did up the old church there.

“More recently we’ve done extension work for Louth County Council, housing work in Malahide and a 22-bed extension on Sunhill Nursing Home in Co Louth.”

The Sunhill Nursing Home in Termonfeckin, which is just outside the town of Drogheda, was a €2.6million project which PSBS commenced in April 2017 and finished just before the New Year.

Paul confirmed that the company have a “couple more big projects” on the way this year, but with nothing concrete yet he couldn’t confirm who or where.

What he could confirm was the increase in business as of late which is likely to see him adding to his full-time staff.

“It’s improved a lot,” he said. “We’ve been getting a lot more enquiries over the last couple of months and we’re tendering for different jobs at the moment.

“I don’t want to go into it too much but one thing I can tell you is that we won’t take on too many jobs at once. I’ll need a few more in the office before that happens.”

For now, PSBS are more than happy with what they’ve got and, not to mention, how business has been going as of late.

The firm does a lot of work alongside All Bright Engineering in Tralee, Co Kerry, travelling nationwide for projects with a particular focus on the capital.

“We will go nationwide for our clients but usually the projects that we take on sees us staying this side of Dublin,” said the Managing Director.

“We’re competitive and offer our clients good value. We like to keep the personal touch as well – I like to be there myself with them when needs be for a project.”

PSBS believe that the key to their growth is ensuring they have satisfied customers who choose to work with them again and again. That kind of repeat business is essential for a growing venture and customer satisfaction is the best way to guarantee it.

Health & Safety is another huge aspect of the business and the company will not compromise on safety, ensuring that it acts responsibly in all that it does.

The approach by PSBS towards Health & Safety is characterised by the company’s core value of acting responsibly and safely which states: “We will not compromise on safety and will act responsibly in all that we do.”

Due to the diverse geographic locations and range of industries that PSBS’s customers operate in, they have developed health and safety systems that are designed to the requirements of each individual project and comply with the most rigorous standards.
