ABM Europe employs 30 staff directly at its Dublin headquarters and a further 15 at its UK office in Nottinghamshire. It also operates smaller offices in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. Whereas the construction / design and build / civil engineering arm of the business is based in Ireland, the UK outlet specialises in precast products (ABM Precast Solutions) and the Czech, Slovak and Polish offices civil engineering.
ABM has five operational divisions, the best known of which is ABM Construction. For over 20 years, ABM Construction has provided a comprehensive building service to government agencies, private developers, major retailers and manufacturers.
ABM Design & Build provides an integrated turn-key design, construction and project management service to government agencies and private developers. Projects include a number of fast-track system build schools for the Department of Education & Skills, a number of nursing care units (50 and 100 bed) for the HSE, luxury apartment complexes and hotels.
“School builds were the mainstay of our business during the recession,” ABM business development manager Keith Thomson explains. “By being on the Department of Education’s framework for Rapid Build Schools, we were able to tender for and successfully complete a number of schools throughout Leinster and Munster. We’ve also completed a number of projects, such as community nursing homes, for the HSE in the recent past.
“With the economy picking up again, we are not as reliant on the education and medical sectors as we once were. There are now more opportunities arising in the industrial, commercial, residential and hospitality sectors. There is more variety and diversity on the horizon, which is great to see.”
ABM has successfully completed a number of large scale residential developments. One of the biggest and most prestigious was the Bloomfield Apartment and Town House development in Donnybrook for Jackson Homes. This consisted of 172 luxury apartments and 14 townhouses. The company was awarded the coveted Bank of Ireland Opus Architecture & Construction Award in the Highly Commended category for this project.
ABM handed over the keys to three new schools in Lucan, Saggart and Enfield last year and has just completed the construction of St. Finian’s National School in Newcastle, Co, Dublin, which is a 24-classroom new build school. Other recent projects have included the refurbishment of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 multi-storey carparks for the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) and the construction of the Ballyogan Environmental and Waste Management Facility for Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
The company’s impressive client-list includes blue-chip multinational technology companies such as Google and IBM. “Based on feedback from the Department of Education and DAA to name but two, our aftercare service is one of our biggest selling points,” continues Keith.

A member of the FCI (Federation Construction Industry), Engineers Ireland, CIRI (Construction Industry Register Ireland) and HomeBond, ABM Europe is committed to the future development and integration of BIM (Building Information Modelling) into the construction industry and has already started this process.
