Established in 1996, Moroney Electrical Contractors Ltd has grown to become one of the major electrical contracting businesses in the south east. Building Ireland caught up with Managing Director Sean Moroney to learn more about the company.
“No job is too big or small” for Moroney Electrical and that approach down through the years perhaps goes a long way towards explaining the reasons for the company’s continued growth and success.
Based in Purcellsinch Business Park, Dublin Road, Kilkenny, Moroney Electrical was set-up by Sean Moroney in 1996 and currently employs just over 40 full-time staff.
Sean himself had been immersed in the industry for years before taking the decision to go out on his own back in ‘96 and, thankfully, hasn’t looked back since.
Since ‘Day One’, providing a quality service to customers has been the main priority for Moroney Electrical, as its Managing Director outlined to Building Ireland.
“Right now we have between 40 and 45 staff working here and we’ve always given our customers good electricians,” said Sean.
“A lot of our customers would be with us years and they are all great companies to work for. We know what they want and they know that we can deliver, so it works well for us all.”
Business right now is flourishing according to the Co Kilkenny native, who currently has two nephews on the payroll.
Things have come a long way over the last 24 years for Moroney Electrical as a steady growth has seen the business not only expand its list of services, but also its customer base.
Today the company is servicing clients nationwide – a far cry from when Sean first started out in the electrical contracting game.
“We were in business in England in the 1980s and finished up there in ’89,” he explained.
“We started up in Kilkenny in 1992 and became a limited company four years later. I had served my time in Kilkenny and new a lot of the customers by that stage and, I have to say, Kilkenny has been good to us.”
The company has a handful of live projects on-going in and around the Marble City, including a nine-month project valued at €900,000 in the Primary Care Centre.
Prior to the government lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Moroney Electrical had just completed work on the renowned Butler Gallery in the city centre and also worked on a 29-aparment complex on Walkin Street for Oaklee Housing.
Outside of Kilkenny, the company has on-going projects at St Gerard’s School in Bray for Ormonde Construction, Dublin Landings for STS Group and the Ringaskiddy Port Re-Development for BAM Ireland to name but a few.
Despite some set-backs with lockdown in 2020, business seems to be booming at the present time.
“As it stands, we’ve got enough work to carry us well into next year but, in saying that, we wouldn’t see this year as being as busy as last year,” said Sean.
“It’s not as busy as it was last year but that’s not necessarily a bad thing either, if you know what I mean by that.”
With staff numbers climbing up to 45 at the present time, Moroney Electrical ensure that they always have the right people for each and every job.
For Sean, giving the client skilled electricians that represent his company for a project has always been the number one priority.
“Employees are being retrained all the time to ensure we update our skills and keep abreast of new technology and techniques,” said the MD.
“We try to take on a few apprentices every year, but in all honesty, it can be hard to get apprentices these days as the construction industry was not the best avenue to go down over the last few years.”
He added: “We have a maintenance section which sees three of our electricians working for the HSE in Kilkenny yearly.
“We also have four electricians working with Jones Engineering Group every six months and two electricians with Connolly’s RED MILLS in Goresbridge.”
As for Moroney Electrical’s services in the commercial/industrial sector, they generally see the company working with consulting engineers, architects, developers, builders or clients.
The services provided include general lighting, emergency Lighting – full design, installation, commissioning and certificate issued.
Fire Alarm Systems and Intruder Alarm Systems are also services that the company provides.
Set to mark 25 years in business next year, Moroney Electrical draws on the experience, skill and loyalty of its staff, as well as the specialist sub-contractors and suppliers, which allows it to offer a broad variety of services to the very highest standard.
They will provide customers with a complete design service for any size lighting installation in domestic and public lighting and this sees them providing street and motorway lighting, pitch floodlights, electrical inspection/testing, house rewiring, periodic testing, immersion, timeclock and storage heaters.
The customer base of the business has increased over the years and long standing customers include Denis Guilfoyle Construction, Eugene Foley Construction Ltd, SIAC, Ormonde Construction Ltd, Conack Construction and Waterford County Council.
And the list of clients continues to grow too, reflecting the success of Moroney Electrical over the past quarter of a century.
Sean himself credits the company’s workforce when it comes to its longevity, particularly its experienced Contract Managers.
“Gary Byrne is based in Arklow and covers all of the Dublin work for us and then we have Kevin Moran here in Kilkenny,” he said.
“Eamon Earl covers most of Wexford for us and all three men are key to the success of Moroney Electrical Contractors Ltd.”
Liam Dunne (Purchasing), Caroline Keegan (QS) and Rosie O’Connell (Accounts Manager) are also integral when it comes to the day-to-day running of the business, as recognised by Sean himself.
Looking towards the months ahead, Sean is keen for the current level of service provided by Moroney Electrical to resume.
“If we can continue to provide the level of service and look to ways maybe of improving it then I think we will be ok. Like I said, we have a good core of customers there and as long as they are happy with the service that we provide, then we must be doing something right,” he concluded.
