Based in Doneraile, Co Cork, John Curran & Sons Construction Ltd offers commercial construction services to its clients. Building Ireland touched based with John Curran himself to learn all about the business and some of the current projects it has on-going at the moment.
These are busy times for John Curran & Sons Construction Ltd and the plan down in Ballyandrew, Co Cork is to try and keep things that way right through 2021.
Established over 20 years, the company has vast experience in the construction industry, extending throughout both the Cork and Munster regions.
Between John Curran and his experienced staff, they ensure that the work undertaken is of the highest standard.
Building Ireland caught up with John recently to hear more about what is very much a thriving business these days down in the Rebel County.
“We are established 20 years plus and right now the company employs 10 full-time staff,” outlined John, whose son Conor is a Trainee Quantity Surveyor having finished college last year.
“Conor completed his four years college in 2020 and he has now left my company to do his last two years with another company for further experience after which he will be fully signed off and qualified. I will have no doubt when he is fully qualified that he will play a great part in my company again.”
John Curran & Sons Construction Ltd have undertaken a number of commercial projects, from shop outlets to commercial premises.
“We work on a lot of nursing homes and commercial buildings like filling stations and shops.”
Some areas which the company has carried out projects in to date includes; Individual Retail Customers, Cork VEC, HSE Cork and the Agriculture sector.
They have undertaken a number of projects for housing developments on behalf of Cork County Council in the past.
Right now, business is booming for the company as it moves more and more towards concentrating on commercial projects in the region.
“We’re very busy at the moment here,” said John.
“We were shut down for five or six weeks during the lockdown but we were flat-out in the weeks that followed and we’re still busy here, thankfully.
“Right now, we’re working on a filling station in Macroom and have another project for Country Clean Recycling in Mallow, which is the construction of a commercial building.”
“We also have two one-off houses that are ongoing at the moment which are nearly completed.”
One-off housing work was a big part of John Curran & Sons Construction Ltd’s repertoire of services.
The company has carried out and completed work on an array of different houses around the Cork area for more than two decades now.
However, John himself explained that commercial projects have now become more of a focus for his business going forward.
“We’re trying to gradually move away from work on one-off houses and focus more on commercial projects,” he stated plainly.
“This year will see more of a focus on commercial projects again and hopefully we can stay busy like we did this year even with everything that went on with Covid and lockdown.”
Established over 20 years (and counting), John Curran & Sons Construction Ltd has come through its share of ups and downs.
Between the economic recession that stung the Irish industry in 2008 to government lockdowns, the company continues to move forward and be optimistic about what lies ahead.
So, what has been the secret to John Curran & Sons Construction Ltd’s longevity and overall success?
For John, the quality of work down through the years has been something which has shone through for the company.
“I think it comes down to good quality workmanship,” he pointed out.
“We’re going 20 years plus now and clients know that they can rely on us to get the job done right with a quality finish.”
Members of Home Bond, Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) and the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), John Curran & Sons Construction Ltd are also C2 Registered and fully insured.
The reputation of the business is a glowing one off the back of the projects it’s completed to date and the good word continues to spread as its focus grows more and more on commercial work.
Looking at the coming months, John, as ever, is very much optimistic for the company heading into another year.
“As I said, we are very busy at the present time and hopefully that will continue for us going forward.
“Nobody knows what’s around the corner but we’re optimistic here for the year ahead,” he concluded.
