Established in 2007, Suirside Construction Ltd has grown to become a recognised main contractor in the south-east after completing projects of all sizes and complexity in the public, private, commercial and pharmaceutical sectors.
The Waterford-based company was founded by Ned Doherty who is now partnered by his son Eddie. It became a limited company 10 years ago and has 22 direct employees comprising site managers, quantity surveyors, administration staff, tradespeople and labourers. These are supported by the same tried and trusted sub-contractors, including Sean Moroney Electrical, Ollie McPhillips Building Energy Services, Colm Kehoe Plastering, Lynch Roofing and Sincon Engineering.
The company’s senior management takes a hands-on approach to help clients realise their dreams of building a world-class structure that can compete with the best in the construction industry. The client is at the centre of each project which leads to many long-term relationships being forged. Suirside Construction prides itself on not only meeting client expectations, but exceeding them.
Superior workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of the family-run operation. Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so since the Covid-19 pandemic. From concept to completion, the Suirside team is with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.
Whether your next project is a new build, extension or fitout, Suirside Construction’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Waterford contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from design teams and scores of satisfied clients.
By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with its engineers and architects, and using only the very best building products, this fully insured contractor is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients. Suirside Construction is a member of the CIF and CIRI, and is also Safe-T-Cert accredited.
“We are proud of our reputation for delivering projects of the highest standard,” Eddie Doherty says.
“In doing so, we place a strong emphasis on safety and staff training. Our tradespeople are fully qualified and we encourage their further education to ensure their skills are always up-to-date. The sectors we are involved in are commercial, residential, pharmaceutical, educational, sports and leisure, conservation, civil works, joinery and fitouts.
“We’ve undertaken numerous school projects and have a wealth of experience in cleanroom environments. We’re very hands-on when it comes to the pharma sector and carry out a variety of work for the likes of Bausch & Lomb, West Pharma, Eirgen Pharma and Horizon Therapeutics on an ongoing basis.
“Over the years we’ve had five staff in Bausch & Lomb during our ongoing projects at the company’s Waterford facility, which will increase in the coming months due to the development of a new CHP Plant in which we have been appointed the CSA Contractor.”
Suirside Construction recently completed two Department of Education projects in Waterford City. The works at St Stephen’s National School consisted of the demolition of an existing redundant single storage building and the construction of a new three-storey building. The general construction methods for this project were concrete retaining walls, masonry blockwork, precast concrete floors, prefabricated trussed roof and composite metal deck roof finishes. It consisted of a ground floor void area, first and second floor occupying two classrooms, complete with toilets, circulation areas and all associated ancillary accommodation and site works.
Works at the 1,200-pupil De La Salle College consisted of a single-storey free-standing school extension which includes a construction studies room, home economics room and multimedia room. Also in 2022, Suirside Construction completed energy efficiency retrofit works at St Laserian’s Special School in Carlow. The works included insulation of thermal bridges, pitched roofs, pumped bonded bead insulation to cavity walls, external windows and door replacement, external wall insulation systems and external rendering. Replacement of flat roofs, roof lights, clerestory windows and surrounds were also carried out.
All works were undertaken during the school summer holidays, which was completed to a tight schedule and a quality finish, to ensure the students could come back to a safe environment.
In addition, Suirside Construction was the main contractor on 10 two-bedroom sheltered housing units for Respond Housing in Wadding Manor, Ferrybank in 2021. The company recently commenced works on one of its most high-profile projects to the date – Phase 1 of the redevelopment of Walsh Park, the home of Waterford GAA.
Valued at €3 million, Phase 1 will consist of a new, uncovered seated stand on the northern terrace and the refurbishment of the existing southern stand. Phase 2 will see the construction of a covered 1,300-seated stand, along with new dressing-rooms and an administration building. The third and final phase will see improvement works carried out to the city end terrace.
