In his capacity as founder and proprietor of Glynn Construction & Maintenance, Chris Glynn has assembled an exceptional crew of skilled tradesmen who consistently and meticulously deliver industry-leading workmanship on sites across the capital and the midlands. Building Ireland briefly interrupted the personable Westmeath man’s busy schedule to find out more.
Within a remarkably short period of time, Glynn Construction & Maintenance has established itself as a building contractor of choice, providing a comprehensive range of prompt, professional and value-added building solutions including residential and commercial new builds, extensions and renovations / conversions as well as specialist carpentry and building maintenance services.
Owner and managing director Chris Glynn has worked in construction all his adult life – longer, even! He left school at Junior Cert age to focus on learning his chosen trade: carpentry. After serving his time, he operated as a sole trader for a number of years providing outstanding carpentry services in and around his native Kinnegad and beyond. Six years ago, spotting a gap in the market for a dependable contracting service, Chris took the decision to establish himself as a main contractor and Glynn Construction & Maintenance was born.
On the back of invariably delivering quality workmanship on every project large or small, the business has gone from strength to strength and Chris has built up an excellent crew of 25+ experienced and skilled tradesmen, whose services are understandably in big demand.
Thus, as well as completing a vast array of projects under the Glynn Construction banner, skilled labour is also supplied on a contract basis to a who’s who of larger contractors (including M&P Construction / Walmac Demolition, Durkan and PJ Hegarty & Sons), providing their much-sought-after expertise to a host of building projects in and around the city.
“It’s really important to have good staff and that’s something I pride myself on,” says Chris, when asked about the key ingredients in running a successful building contracting company. “Reliability is also vital in construction, and keeping your word. You have to go out of your way to look after the client and give them the level of service they deserve.”
That pretty much sums up Glynn Construction’s calling card: they invariably leave behind them a great product and a satisfied client, which inevitably results in more work from repeat business and / or positive referrals through word of mouth. Your word is everything in construction and – though a comparative newcomer – Chris’ company enjoys an enviable reputation for dependability industry-wide.
“Business is good and I certainly can’t complain,” he confirms. “Around home, I have a year’s work ahead of me between extensions and renovations, while in Dublin there’s at least another three months solid there for 15-20 lads or more, and we’re regularly getting enquiries, so we have a very healthy order book there at the moment, thankfully.”
Since its inception in 2017, Glynn Construction has completed a series of attractive bespoke turnkey new build homes to exact customer specifications while an unrivalled track record for industry-leading extension / renovation work also precedes them.
Current and soon-to-start local projects in Westmeath include an extension to a domestic dwelling, the renovation of a three-bedroom home and the complete top-to-bottom transformation of an old house. Chris is also dipping his toes into a development venture, with work due to commence imminently: “I’ve purchased a property in Kinnegad, which was a restaurant with a second building out the back,” he reveals.
“When time permits, I’m going to renovate that into apartments, with a coffee shop or restaurant to the front. It’s something new and it’s going to be an interesting project to work on.”
Over the years, Chris has gradually built up an excellent team of tradesmen, whose proven expertise and dependability are at the very heart of Glynn Construction & Maintenance. “I have 25-30 lads working for me directly, who are either working on my own projects or hired out to the bigger contractors. At the moment, I have six men committed to extensions and renovations at home and the rest are working steadily in Dublin. When the contractors need skilled men, they ring me and we go in and get the work done.
“It took a while to build up that crew but I have great men there now and I get on well with all the lads. I look after them and keep them happy and I know I can rely on them to always produce quality work.”
Another strength of Glynn Construction & Maintenance is that Chris is a hands-on proprietor who leads by example on site and makes himself available to clients at all times. “I’m always on hand to deal with the client directly,” confirms the Kinnegad man who is a long-time supporter and sponsor of the local Coralstown/Kinnegad GAA club. “We talk to people and always leave a good job behind us. Once you do that, you won’t go far wrong.”
