Hickey Plumbing Contractors (HPC) is a one-stop shop for all your plumbing needs, specialising in large-scale installations for new builds, housing developments and commercial projects nationwide.
Established in 2019 by Brendan Hickey, the Kilkenny-based company has grown to employ 70 people directly who are supported and supplemented by the same tried and trusted contractors. It also has a fleet of 30 vehicles on the road and prides itself on meticulous attention to detail, technical expertise and a commitment to exceeding client expectations.
HPC works closely with builders, developers and main contractors to deliver complete plumbing solutions that meet the highest industry standards and project timelines. Its team also provides drainage solutions, compliance testing and reliable ongoing maintenance for long-term performance. Boasting a wealth of industry experience, HPC focuses on workmanship, compliance and professional service from start to finish.
While large-scale residential projects have become HPC’s forte, it also offers a wide range of other services to both residential and commercial clients, including general plumbing, heating systems, renewable energy solutions, residential plumbing, commercial plumbing, service and repairs.
“We’ve evolved over the years to specialise in high-density residential developments ranging from 20 to 400 units,” Brendan explains.
“We also provide the servicing aspect, the out-of-hours repairs, contracting and maintenance, but large-scale projects are what we’ve become best known for. Our goal is to deliver on time and within budget for developers. We have a proven track record in this regard. Aftersales is also critical. We simplify things like heat pumps and make the handover as seamless as possible.
“From humble beginnings, we’ve built up a thriving and highly-respected business. Every job is completed to the highest standard and by using only the very best products. We’re exceptionally busy and hope to increase our turnover by another 30-40% in 2026. We enjoy an excellent working relationship with all our clients who include Mythen Construction, Glenveagh Homes, CField Construction, BHA Construction and Randalswood Construction to name but a few.
“We’ve become a trusted partner in the construction industry.”
Brendan attributes his award-winning company’s meteoric rise and success to his expert team.
“Our people are our greatest asset,” he says without any hesitation.
“We have a great, great team of qualified and apprentice plumbers who are supported by Yvonne, Tracey and Amanda in the office. They delegate everything. It’s a well-oiled machine. We’re also very family-orientated and are proud of the family atmosphere that exists within the company – if someone needs to take some time off for personal reasons, it’s never an issue. Our staff retention is fabulous.
“A huge part of our success is rooted in our strong focus on continuous staff development and meaningful engagement with apprenticeship programmes run by Solas and Kilkenny/Carlow ETB. Investing in our people is at the core of everything we do, with Health & Safety also being a top priority.”
The affable managing director adds: “I’m always very positive in my outlook. The days go by quickly, despite the long hours involved. It doesn’t feel like work to me because I’m passionate about what we do and ensuring our customers are completely satisfied.”
Among HPC’s recently-completed projects are Ramsfort Park, Wexford for Mythen Construction; Kings Court, Callan for Renesa; Abbeyhill, Thomastown and Croker’s Hill, Kilkenny for Ormonde Construction; Clongowes Wood College, Clane for KL Construction; and Cluain Glasan, Kilkenny for Glenveagh Homes.
Current projects include Fountain Field, Thomastown for G2 Construction; Season Meadows, Netownmountkennedy for Beldare Homes; Ferrybank, Waterford and Coneyboro, Athy for BHA Construction; The Orchard, Watergrasshill for CField Construction; Bishop’s Road, Portarlington for Randalswood Construction; Collins’ Lane, Tullamore for The Maltings & Granary; Castleoaks, Kilkenny for Ormonde Construction; and Rath Rua, Portlaoise for Glenveagh Homes.
Ironically, HPC’s most high-profile recent project wasn’t a large-scale development but a life-changing makeover to a family home in Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny that featured on the hit TV show, ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ late last year.
Famous for bringing out the very best in people, ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ is a heart-warming, inspirational series aired on RTÉ One. Deserving families facing difficult personal circumstances, who need help to improve their quality of life, get a significant home renovation – all delivered by the goodwill of trades, suppliers, contractors and the local community.
In each episode, an army of volunteer builders, labourers, trades, suppliers, friends and neighbours come together, giving their time, labour and materials, to help a local family whose lives have been impacted by a significant loss or misfortune. Baz Ashmawy and the team meet families across the country who may be struggling to cope with a devastating illness or life-changing condition, and who need help to rebuild their homes – and hopefully, transform their lives in the process.
HPC featured in an episode which saw them work alongside other volunteers and members of the community in Mooncoin to help complete a dream home for the O’Hanlon family, who need a specially-adapted house for their little girl, Aoibhínn, who was born with a severe form of spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
“Our team was proud to contribute to the plumbing works on this build. It was rewarding to see so many people give their time and skills to help the family,” Brendan says.
“We provided the plumbing, bathroom and kitchen installations. Working alongside other local trades, suppliers and volunteers, we helped design and fit systems that support the home’s accessibility features. Every element was built with care, ensuring the home is both practical and comfortable for the whole family.”
As HPC continues to go from strength to strength, the Dungarvan, Co. Kilkenny native would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients and suppliers for their unwavering support as well as his staff and subcontractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise. Brendan would also like to thank Michael Lyng Motors in Kilkenny for supplying the company with its vans and Sign & Design for branding same.
