For over 50 years, Hudson Brothers Ltd has been a trusted name in the supply of aggregates, sand, gravel and crushed rock to Ireland’s construction sector. From its base at New Paddocks, Blessington, Co Wicklow, the family-run business has grown from a local quarrying operation established by three brothers into one of the leading independent suppliers of construction materials in the eastern region.
Founded in 1971 by brothers Peter Hudson Snr, Jack Hudson and Paddy Hudson, Hudson Brothers has become synonymous with quality and dependable service. Over 50 years later, the company continues to play a vital role in delivering the materials needed to support Ireland’s housing, infrastructure, educational and commercial development projects.
Today, the business remains firmly rooted in family ownership and management, with the day-to-day running of the company continuing to build on the values established by its founders while investing in modern operations and long-term growth.
Their stewardship has ensured that the company retains the values that have underpinned its success since the beginning while continuing to invest in modern operations and long-term growth.
“We’re based in New Paddocks, Blessington, Co Wicklow and we’re in excess of 50 years now at this location,” Sales Manager Declan Murphy told Building Ireland. “They started in 1971.”
Murphy himself is a long-serving member of the team and has witnessed the company’s continued evolution first-hand.
“I’m Sales Manager and I’m with the company 17 years now this year,” he said.
That longevity is a reflection of the stability and culture within the organisation. Hudson Brothers currently employs more than 50 staff and operates a significant fleet to service customers throughout the region.
The company’s core business centres on the production and supply of certified aggregates and construction materials for a broad range of projects.
Through its quarrying and processing operations, Hudson Brothers supplies materials that are essential for roads, utilities, housing developments, schools, commercial buildings and civil engineering works.
“We’re supplying certified aggregates, sand, gravel and crushed rock to the construction industry,” Murphy explained.
“We’re also involved in supplying a lot of bagged products like jumbo bags and the 25kg smaller bags for hardware depots and building providers. So we cover Dublin, Kildare and north Wicklow mainly, but we’re probably one of the leading independent suppliers based in the eastern region.”
The company’s strategic location in Blessington places it at the heart of one of Ireland’s busiest construction corridors. Its customer base extends across Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow, enabling Hudson Brothers to serve some of the country’s largest contractors and developers while maintaining the responsive service expected from an independent family business.
Supporting that service is a significant logistics operation, ensuring materials can be delivered efficiently to projects of every scale.
The current strength of Ireland’s construction sector is reflected in Hudson Brothers’ project portfolio. The company is involved in a wide range of developments spanning residential, educational, energy and infrastructure sectors.
“Things are going well at the moment and, as I said, we’re focused on supplying quality materials,” Murphy stated.
“There’s a lot of housing development going on at the moment and you’ve got roads, utilities and we’ve got a lot of school projects going on at the moment.”
Among the company’s recent high-profile projects was the Glenamuck Road Development in south Dublin, a significant transport infrastructure scheme delivered by BAM Contractors. Hudson Brothers supplied materials that contributed to the successful completion of this important project, which will improve connectivity and support future residential growth in the area.
Education remains another strong sector for the business. Murphy highlighted a major school project in Griffeen, Lucan, where Hudson Brothers supplied materials for a development undertaken by JJ Rhatigan.
The company’s involvement in major urban regeneration schemes further demonstrates its capability and reputation. One notable project currently underway is the redevelopment of the historic Fruit & Vegetable Market in Smithfield, Dublin city centre.
“We’re involved in a development now with Purcell Construction in the Fruit & Vegetable Market in Smithfield in the centre of Dublin. It’s being redeveloped at the moment,” Murphy explained.
Hudson Brothers is also contributing to one of Ireland’s most significant energy infrastructure projects through its involvement in the upgrade of Poolbeg Generating Station in Ringsend.
“We’re doing the upgrade of Poolbeg Generating Station down in Ringsend with a company called Cobra, which are a Spanish company but they’re also using John Sisk & Sons as part of that,” Murphy said.
Residential construction remains a major driver of demand for the company’s products.
Hudson Brothers recently completed supply works for an apartment development in Citywest carried out by Monami Construction and continues to support several housing schemes throughout the region.
“We’re just finishing one (development) here in Blessington at the moment,” Murphy noted. “We’ve more coming up as well with a housing development in Naas and in Blessington and we’re also on another school project over in Newbridge.”
As Ireland grapples with housing shortages and increasing infrastructure requirements, Hudson Brothers is focused on securing the long-term future of its quarry operations. The extension is critical not only for Hudson Brothers but for the wider construction industry in the eastern region. Demand for aggregates continues to grow as Ireland addresses housing delivery, infrastructure investment and commercial development. Securing long-term reserves allows the company to provide certainty of supply to contractors and support the Government’s ambitions for housing and economic growth.
“We’re trying to push for planning permission at the moment for an extension to the quarry,” Murphy outlined.
“We have two parts to the quarry. So we have a sandpit up here, which is based in Wicklow, but we also have the rock quarry, which is based in Kildare, and the Kildare part is the one that’s in planning now. Wicklow still has a few years left before we must reapply.
“So we’re trying to get an extension to the quarry and do long-term planning,” Murphy said. “The government has mentioned that supply is critical and we’d see ourselves as one of the critical industries for construction.”
Despite the scale of its operations and project portfolio, Hudson Brothers continues to differentiate itself through its independence, the quality of its products and the service it provides. Alongside continued investment in its people, safety standards and sustainable operations, the company remains committed to supporting customers across the region. Hudson Brothers is also an active supporter of its local community through the sponsorship of local teams and events.
“A: we’re independent and B: we have very good quality sands, gravel and crushing material up here,” Murphy stated. “They can always rely on a good service.”
Looking ahead, Hudson Brothers intends to continue growing responsibly to meet increasing demand while maintaining the high standards that have underpinned the business for over 50 years.
“We’re trying to grow with the demand that’s out there at the moment and continued supply is important,” Murphy concluded.
After over 50 years of serving the construction industry, Hudson Brothers Ltd remains a cornerstone of the eastern region’s supply chain. With a strong family legacy, an experienced workforce, continued investment and plans to secure the future of its quarry operations, the company is well positioned to continue supporting Ireland’s growth for many years to come.
