Being recognised for the work a company does on a national level can be very rewarding. For many, they strive to be successful in all aspects of their business.
One area that has become paramount among companies’ goals and targets is health and safety, especially in the construction industry where the safety of all concerned has increased ten-fold in recent years.
Long gone are the days when the words ‘health’ and ‘safety’ were frowned upon and that attitude has been replaced by a eagerness to learn to carry out work in a safe environment.
The National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) holds an award ceremony every year to recognise the safety work carried out by businesses.
One of this year’s winners was the KD Group who are no strangers to picking up awards as the company’s reputation for delivering excellence and a high quality of work in a safe manner precedes them.
The Mayo based company with a regional office in Dublin, specialises in a full range of mechanical and electrical services. They have a skilled, loyal, professional team who are foremost to the success of the company and they are dedicated to building a solid client relationship and guaranteeing a quality service.
Health and Safety manager Caroline Mullins spoke to Building Ireland about their attitude towards H&S and what makes them so unique in this area.
“Implementing health and safety procedures in the company is not just driven by me in my role, but from the top right down,” stressed Caroline.
“The management are 100% behind what we are doing and everyone is on the same page. We all want the best from safety and we have no major incidents in that respect.”
Caroline admitted that it was imperative to have high standards when it comes to H&S as companies have come to expect that.
“The standards of health and safety have certainly increased a lot. All the major companies have their own standards which are very high. So for us, to go to any job, we have to have everything in place in that regard.”
To ensure that the company’s employees are aware of their H&S procedures, Caroline revealed that they carry out a lot of in-house training.
“We do an induction course for everyone that starts including manual handling and abrasive wheel training. I’m a qualified instructor myself and do the training. The company feels that this is very beneficial as employees know what we expect from them in this regard.”
Caroline’s job description includes visiting sites on a weekly basis to ensure that the work is being carried out in a safe environment and this includes everyone that is on site.
“Not just the employees are expected to follow our safety standards, but any of the sub-contractors that are on the site must ensure that they match our high standards also.
“The attitude towards health and safety has changed massively over the years, which is great to see, but it is not just a case of getting to a certain level, we are always looking at ways to try and improve.”
The company’s drive to better themselves in all areas of their work has certainly being recognised as stated earlier, national awards are common place and Caroline insisted that they are delighted to have collected so many awards over the years.
“It is great to be recognised for the work that we are doing. We have been fairly successful in recent years on the awards front and when you are recognised at national level, it makes it all the more special.”
The quality of their service is backed up with International Certification. The company is registered and certified by QAS International for OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Every project undertaken by KD Group comes with the assurances that it will be completed to the highest international quality standards and it will be fully complaint with all safety, health and environmental legislation.
