Slamen Carpentry & Construction Ltd celebrates 20 years

5 Nov, 2026

Celebrating 20 years in business, Slamen Carpentry & Construction Ltd has earned an enviable reputation for high-quality residential projects in the Midlands and West.

Based in Ballintubber, Co Roscommon, Slamen Carpentry & Construction Ltd was founded by Sean Slamen in June 2006 and became a limited company 11 years later. Having initially specialised in carpentry and roofing works, it evolved into offering a full suite of building services to clients, including new builds, extensions, renovations / refurbishments, mobility adaptions, asbestos removal as well as public and commercial contracts.

Reflecting on the first 20 years, Sean – who is a carpenter by trade – says: “We were very busy for the first two years and then the recession hit in 2008. Thankfully, our good name ensured that there was enough work to keep two of us going through it. We started as a carpentry business before gradually moving into construction. I built my own house just before the downturn and that’s how we got started in construction.

“In the early days, we completed some big projects in Dublin, including an estate in Blackrock comprising nine luxury houses and six apartments, and an underground car park in Ballsbridge. But we stay closer to home nowadays.”

Outstanding workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of Slamen Carpentry & Construction Ltd. From concept to completion, Sean and his small, but dedicated team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs.

Whether your next project is a new build, extension or refurbishment, Slamen Carpentry & Construction Ltd’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and stress-free. The Roscommon company’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from design teams and scores of satisfied clients.

By employing highly-skilled tradespeople, working closely with engineers and architects, and using only the very best building products from local suppliers such as Cooney’s Homevalue, Elphin and Garvey’s (Heiton Buckley), Roscommon, this fully insured and qualified contractor is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients.

Sean is joined in the family business by his wife Elaine, who looks after the paperwork, and six employees, including Daniel Connolly, who won the World Skills Competition in Roofing at the RDS three years ago. The Slamen team is supported and supplemented by the same tried and tested subcontractors, including electrician David Beatty, plumbers Tom Frayne and Michael Grogan, plasterers Michael Feeney and Peter Byrne, who work as a partnership, Sean Crane and Barry Egan of Eco Insulation Services and Alan Lohan Agri.

“We have our own plant to carry out groundworks. But we also use Alan for the bigger jobs,” the affable Tulsk man explains.

“We care about quality of workmanship, personal attention and client satisfaction, and continue to have high levels of repeat business and referrals. We have a great name for completing projects to an extremely high finish. We aim to deliver a friendly, yet professional and approachable service to all of our clients.”

Embracing modern methods of construction, Sean mainly uses Castleforms insulated rafts and ICF walls on new house extensions. The vast majority of these projects are carried out in collaboration with James Lohan Consulting Engineers. Based in Roscommon Town, the practice is a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and architects who offer a complete service ranging from initial assessment and conceptual drawings through planning applications to construction and supervision.

Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) is an increasingly popular method of building construction using lightweight and hollow insulation forms that fit together and are then filled with concrete. Once set, the concrete becomes a high-strength structure and the formwork remains in place as thermal insulation.

A building constructed using the Castleforms ICF system will achieve far higher thermal, sound and fire performance standards than traditional construction methods such as block or timber frame, and at a much lower cost for comparable performance than any other building system available today. A house built with ICF systems will easily meet the building regulation’s requirements for air-tightness, junction thermal bridging minimisation and U-Value needed for an A3-rated home as standard.

“James Lohan got us into ICF which we now use on 90% of our extensions. But we have yet to use it on new builds. Our new build clients still opt for the traditional block-built method,” Sean continues.

“Our current projects include large ICF extensions to cottages in Strokestown and Ballintubber, and new builds in Rockingham, Boyle beside Lough Key Forest Park and Barrymore, Athlone. Both are stunning homes with stunning views. The latter project is being carried out in conjunction with architect Tommy Flynn. We also recently completed a 4,000 sq. ft. new build in Roscommon Town.

“Another string to our bow is asbestos removal. We are fully-trained and fully-insured to remove asbestos. To this end, we recently removed asbestos from the handball alley in Castlerea St Kevin’s GAA club and replaced it with insulated Kingspan sheeting.

“We’ve done school projects and a lovely playground in Ballintubber in the past, but it’s nearly all residential projects at the moment. We’re very busy with them.”

As Slamen Carpentry & Construction Ltd continues to go from strength to strength, Sean would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients and suppliers for their continued support as well as his staff for their hard work, dedication and expertise. He is also grateful for the support he receives at home from Elaine and children Fia and Shauna.
