Ollie McPhillips Ltd has been leading the way in building energy services since its establishment 15 years ago. Building Ireland caught up with man himself to find out what they’re all about, as well as learn about past and present projects for the Wexford-based company.
Ollie McPhillips Ltd is a mechanical engineering company which has been engaged in a wide range of commercial and domestic projects since its inception in 2001.
Specialising in Energy Efficient Installations, the company provides a one stop service from design to installation and commissioning of complete systems.
These systems include Solar Heating, Heat Recovery, Ventilation, Heat Pumps, Wood Pellet Boilers, Rainwater Harvesting and Photovoltaic Solar all over Ireland to Residential, Healthcare, Education, Offices, Pharmaceutical, manufacturing & warehousing and leisure.
Ollie McPhillips Ltd is registered with S.E.A.I. to carry out Grant Approved.
The company is situated in New Ross, Co Wexford, with a second office in Dublin, and headed up by Ollie McPhillips, who was good enough to take time out of his busy schedule to speak to us recently and explain the ins and outs of his company.
“We’re based at Unit 3 Ring Road Business Park in New Ross, Co Wexford and we’ve another office in Citywest, Dublin,” said Ollie.
“The company is established since 2002 and we have 20 staff working here, which includes my wife Triona, the company’s financial controller and two brothers ,Trevor who oversees Estimation, Procurement and office operations, Kevin who supervises on site works.”
The company’s history dates back to a time when Ollie McPhillips himself was conducting a one-man operation back in the early 1990s, working with many of the clients that he still has today having stayed loyal to him down through the years.
Now Ollie McPhillips Ltd offers its clientele the entire package when it comes to mechanical and renewable energy. Manufacturing & Warehousing, Healthcare, Leisure, Residential, Offices and Pharmaceutical are the kind of projects in which the company are currently immersed in.
“When I started out in this line of work it was as a sole trader back in 1992,” explained Ollie. We went from one employee to having 50 by 2005 and that’s why I took the decision to become a limited company.
“We continued from there and when things went down a bit around 2007 we downsized , but there has been a good turn around now and we’re busier than ever, thankfully and are continuing to grow
Past projects in Manufacturing & Warehousing included work on a commercial building in Dunleer, Co Louth for clients Glen Dimplex.
Services on this particular project included the supply and installation of main pipe runs from plant room, passive cooling pipework circuit to both the IT room and meeting room.
It also entailed pipework, valves, pumps and foilback insulation within the plantroom; hot, cold and hot return pipework and installation of sanitary ware, including hot returns, cold water storage tank and booster pump, heating and cooling is provided to the building through the same Smart Radiators and heatpumps.
As well as this, 4 x 120mtr bore holes including a 20-metre test borehole were completed to run Geothermal heatpumps with each bore hole being monitored for R&D data.
In healthcare, the company carried out work at the Maher Private in Mahon, Co Cork for clients John Cleary Developments Ltd.
Ollie McPhillips Ltd’s task on the project included the supply and installation of LPHW, water services, chilled beams and pipework, car park ventilation system, AHU and ducting to hospital ventilation system, which were carried out and completed.
Waterford County Council previously hired the company for a leisure project at Splashworld in Tramore, Co Waterford, where services included the supply, installation and commissioning of all new swimming pool circulating pumps, two condensing high efficiency gas boilers as part of the building energy up grade works, these works where done in a very tight programme while keeping the swimming pool open for business.
On the residential end, Ollie McPhillips Ltd’s have carried out numerous projects all throughout Ireland since the company’s inception, including some very large high end residences,
In Co Kilkenny, they completed work at the Mount Juliet Rose Garden Lodges for clients Quinn Reddin Ltd.
These works included the renovation of bespoke holiday residences, including the stripping out of all existing sub-standard services, re-instate plant room including geothermal heat pumps, cold water storage, booster pumps, DHW calorifier and associated plant and equipment, re-instate under floor heating, water services and drainage pipework.
They also carried out supply and installation of solar systems, all the residences are supplied with a communal geothermal pumping station which can meter the heat demand for each house.
Past office projects have saw the company mostly situated around Mahon in Co Cork. In the EMC Offices in the town, Ollie McPhillips Ltd supplied and installed water services to the complete shell and core of 300,000 sq ft building. They also supplied and installed sanitary ware, water and waste services using copper and Terrain piping.
This particular project was carried out for BAM Contractors, they have just completed the expansion of clients Voxpro new offices at the Point Village in Dublin.
With regards to pharmaceutical projects, Ollie McPhillips Ltd are building a nice portfolio in this particular sector having worked for Lake Region Medical in recent years. They’ve also done project work for Radox in Co Donegal and Clearstream in Co Wexford.
The company’s work with SuirEng saw them stationed at Eirgen Pharma Ltd in Waterford for a stint.
Their services there included the supply and installation of three new gas fired boilers, water and waste services, Chillers and chilled water services, laboratory gases, insulation and cladding, air conditioning, ventilation, chemical cleaning & natural gases. The ventilation consisted of 2 large AHUs, insulated ductwork ,grilles and commissioning.
At the moment, the firm have a number of on-going projects, five of which see them currently situated in the capital.
“We’re very busy right now and we’re hoping to keep expanding,” said Ollie.
“We’re working on a couple of new housing developments in Marlay Park in Dublin and in Shankill as well, so we’re being kept busy.”
He added: “We have a lot of loyalty to our clients because it was those same clients that kept us moving throughout the downturn and we owe a lot to them.”
Now into a new year, Ollie’s hoping for more of the same and that 2017 follows the same trend as the year previous.
“Hopefully 2017 will be another improvement on 2016 and we can take it from there,” he concluded.
